I thought this interview was rather funny : Link Here :

It does show a more arrogant side to him, a side Im sure none of you have ever seen before cough cough.

My favorite part is when the interview says : Finally do you listen to any current music that is out there?

He replies : Sorry I don’t listen to any other music really.

I must admit I thought that was funny biggrin.gif. Someone in the comment section of the Interview responded to that with a great comment saying

"Sorry I don’t listen to any other music really"

And it shows. Ever read books by authors that haven't read other books?

Discuss.

I have just read this interview and all comments by people. Those guys don't get his point at all.

Over the years you’ve earned quite a reputation for being very difficult to work with?

Since I write everything and I pay the salary, somebody is benefiting a lot from being with me.

I agree with him 100%. If you offer money to somebody to do the job, then somebody has to chose whether he wants it or not. If you take it then you have to do it and of course do not try to take any kind of control. The control is in Yngwie's hands. I also know how much money these guys make because my singer was supposed to sing on his previous record. He pays really good money to these people. And when a musician get kicked out from his band, they are saying so many bad things about him. They would have never made a name if they were not with him in the band. It is true that his attitude is extremely high but that's Yngwie we know that. That's nothing to do with his music. Yngwie made guitar revolution and totaly changed guitar playing on this planet. Now when you hear terms like shred and neoclassic, for sure it didn't come from Petrucci or some other mom's boy from Berklee. It is from Yngwie and that is something to be well respected. I also understand that he doesn't listen to any other music. What I don't understand is why does that statement sound so strange to people.

I have to agree with Emir. Yngwie is a wild man, but I think his eccentricities stem from his musical genius.

He is the father of neo-classical shred, and his incredible technique is a result of his passion for classical music where to truly pay homage to his influences, and satisfy his muse, he had to turn it up a notch technique-wise.
It took alot of balls to come to the States to persue his dream, and it paid off big time.

He is arrogant as hell, making him immature emotionally, but the guy has a vision for his music that he must follow.
I don't see him in any other band context than his own, because he has to play his music his way. Maybe he'll mellow out as he gets older, but I put up with him to enjoy his genius playing.

And, there is nothing wrong with his statement about not listening to the music of other people. That doen't speak to his arrogance. I've read other interviews where he spoke of his admiration for certain guitarists. I think Yngwie is mellowing out somewhat, but his playing is what it's all about after all.

I laugh when he carries on like a simpleton, then I listen to his awesome playing and have to shake my head. He's a true original.

I agree with you Emir to most extent - except the Berklee part biggrin.gif
No really he has right to make up the deals and people he wants to work with . If he is perfectionist about it thats perfectly fine to look for improvements and new musicians. When it comes to the listening to music part I also agree. He has his style of playing set for many years, he does what he does GREAT and as you mentioned and we all know already he was pioneer in neo classical era so that sets him apart from everybody else.
Now all future generations that want to shred and play have to come up with something new in order to be original.
I used to love Yngwie's playing and music. I still have his cd's, used to play songs from best of cd and some others( far beyond the sun , black star, triology suite, demon rider etc) but I stopped listening to his music because it became to predictable (or my ears simply started digging jazz stuff cool.gif .) But I do agree he is some sort of influence to any shred guitar player but I just don't care much about his music - just like he doesn't care for other peoples music wink.gif

Malmsteen is a great musician, that´s for sure. It´s HIS music, so he´s taking control don´t know what´s wrong about that...
But it´s also true that he has a giant ego biggrin.gif i mean he´s compairing himself with Picasso and Da Vinci and i think this is a bit too much, because Da Vinci was an alround genius who invented thinks like a helicopter and studied the human body like no one before and it took a long time till his inventions were realized. So to compare himself with Da Vinci is just not right! Malmsteen is "just" a musician, not someone who changes the world or so..

So wrong! You took that completely out of it's context! dry.gif He never claimed to be an artist, an inventor like Da Vinci or Picasso. He only said he couldn't work in a band situation but wanted to make all the creations himself and stay in total control. And drew a parallell between himself, Da Vinci and Picasso being the same type of persons, ~control freaks who work on their own. Had nothing to do with being genious. Such conclusions is like plain bad journalism when picking out the goodies without bothering about the real meaning of what was being said.

laugh.gif at the mamas boy from Berklee part.

Anways. I agree with you to a certain extent. Of course Yngwie is a technical and a great composer, this we cant deny. Im sorry though. I cant even understand how a great musician like himself, wouldnt be listening to any music ? Nothing at all ? Just some Queen in the car? Thats it !?!?!?! Im sure if you went out and asked other great guitarists like Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, David Gilmour, Petrucci, etc. etc., they would be quick to respond with a variety of bands and artists. That is just arrogance at its best.

And I agree with Pat. Comparing oneself to DaVinci, Picasso ? I know for a fact if you asked either one of those Great Artists,

"Hey , whos art have you been looking at lately ?"

They wouldnt respond " I dont look at any other art."

He said " Sorry I dont listen to any other music really."

Im sure he has, but I guess what made that stand out to me was that, If Yngwie just listened to one album from any band or artist or anything, we might catch some more variety in his playing.

@ MickeM you are rigth, i took it out of context and i also know what he intended to express with that, but i think it just fits into the picture that Malmsteen compares himself with the best of a certain genre... any artist wants to have total control of what he creates so there´s no reason to say "I’m like Pablo Picasso or Leonardo Di Vinci" He could have said it in general but he didn´t. And i think that just speaks for his enormous ego.

To be honest with you, I don't really listen to other music smile.gif I used to listen a lot, but now I'm in a phase that I am listening music in my head.. at my home most of the time is complete silence, because I like to hear my thoughts clearly, and always have one of guitars nearby in case I get a musical idea. I don't think it would make me an arrogant person smile.gif

I've also heard of his ego and bad attitude. But don't you think some of it can be from rumors? Like this example here, there are so many people who will just pass on what they hear, and now they could read that Yngwie compares himself with Da Vinci. One person who read this tells his friends who tells their friends and all of a sudden there's a rumor spreading that Yngwie said he's like Da Vinci.
And nobody cares to find out whether it's true or not. Even if someone would print a denyal who'd care to read that and who'd care to spread that further?

No, in general I think it's important to try not to spread bad rumors around since that's only there to hurt people. Unless we're talking about truly bad people but this isn't Hitler. Now it was a misinterpretion but see how easy it is to start something. blink.gif

I fully agree on that. Lately I have been listening to blues, only blues and nothing else and that's because we have a blues gig coming. Anything else would be disturbing as I'm keeping the phrases and licks in my head. Like you and Yngwie does I think helps ones own creativity so I don't see that as "arrogant" but rather very healthy in stimulating and developing ones own musicality.

I know myself that when I've been listening to f.ex Iron Maiden and I sit down to record a song it will sound a lot like Iron Maiden instead of my own song. Better to start with a clear uninfluensed mind.

I've heard the stories of Yngwie's arrogance but directly from close friends, It turns out Yngwie lives here in Miami, I have never ran into him, but a couple of friends of mine have in Sam Ash, Guitar Center.

A friend of mine that works in Ruby Tuesday saw him, and he says he didn't know who he was, as he is not a Malmsteen fan but has heard of him because he also plays guitar. Yngwie was dressed in his Classical Composer outfit so a waiter decided to ask who he was, and he responded "Malmsteen", he didn't have a clue who that was, but he told my friend and he remembered, and then he told me "I saw your Guitar God at the restaurant the other day".

I am a Malmsteen fan, even though lately his work is not to the same level as his debut album "Rising Force", or 2nd "Marching Out", I am still waiting for the next good Malmsteen album, what can I say, I really want listen to this one.

When I personally meet the guy, I will let you guys know if he is actually arrogant or not.

The interview wasn't that bad at all - not nearly as overpowering when he was younger.

Sounds like he is too busy to listen to other music all that much.

Personally, I don't really care too much about his personality - all I know is that I enjoyed his music immensely in the 80's but I have since moved on to different (not better) music. I do think though, that I may pick up his new CD to see what he has been up to - after all, noone can deny he has had an enormous impact for music.

I agree with Emir, I read the interview, and I think he is arrogant but I think he's just being honest about it. He answered everything really clear, and with an attitude, I don't think he cares about what people will think about it, it's he's own thing I guess. He did accomplish a lot, so if did it with that kind of attitude, then who can judge him?

I'm preety sure he wasn't 100% serious on that interview, I mean come on, it's Yngwie, not exactly a guy known for his seriousness, he just has fun and working his character smile.gif
