after watching a few people use a bow on their guitars i was just wondering if there is a special technique or knack to it other than just striking against the strings?

You know I have totally forgoten about this, I saw this first long time ago in a Whitesnake video, and I believe that Jimmy Page did it too, I have never tried this myself.

Never tried it as well, would need a bow for that.
But it's probably no big deal for playing simple stuff like couple of riffs etc, give it a try. -------------------- Youtube
