after watching a few people use a bow on their guitars i was just wondering if there is a special technique or knack to it other than just striking against the strings?

Never tried it as well, would need a bow for that. biggrin.gif

But it's probably no big deal for playing simple stuff like
couple of riffs etc, give it a try. wink.gif

Perhaps not a band that you guitar heros like too much wink.gif , but they use a bowed guitar in a very effective way to create wonderfull soundscapes

They have this little thing called the E-Bow now, its smaller than a normal bow, but it vibrates the strings all the same. Its pretty awesome sounding live, too. Plus, its electronic, so u just hold it on the strings and it does the work for ya

E-Bow's are slightly different though. I love E-Bows however but what they are talking about is slightly better and using like a violin bow.

You can probably follow similar holding positions as with violin playing, you can check out YT tutorials on the subject.

I messed around with this years ago, and it just is like bowing anything that uses a bow...violin,,cello, etc...

The best thing though is if you are going to dedicate to doing something like this have a guitar that can be set up differently than a regular guitar. See the problem is that guitar string all have the same height, so bowing say the A string is going to pose a problem without hitting the other strings.

Bowed instruments have their string height in such a way that it forms a curve so each individual string can be bowed with out hitting other strings.

I had an old guitar that was basically just a kick around guitar and what i did was to change the action height across the strings to form an arc, i had to redo the intonation as well of course, perhaps you don't want to take it that far.

To use a bow, you would need to apply rosin in order for the hairs to grip the strings and produce sound. It could get pretty messy because rosin dust will fly everywhere and get into your electronics. It also gets sticky if you don't clean it over time.
