CooL! I'm completely the opposite! Okay, I can play canon rock bits at full speed but Muris'oriental shred? NO WAY. I can improvise on the other hand, blues n stuff that is. Good luck buddy

Welcome to GMC. Jamming isn't really difficult. All you need to do is learn a few scales, think of the chord prog and improvise over it. If you can play Muris' Oriental Shred, this should be easy for you.

Hey Muris,

this reply is a bit overdue but never too late, right? I'm not very proud to admit that my fingers can fly but I can't improvise at all! It gets worse, the day you posted mojo oro, I mastered it at 130 bpm and getting very close to 170 the whole way through.

I must say, your style is one of the most inspiring I've ever seen. You are one seriously bad ass player. I will have plenty of time to practice guitar the month of January and plan on practicing every day. If I know my pentatonic scales and have a few licks memorized, what would you say is the next most important step toward improvising?

I have friends that own clubs and bars here in San Francisco and they always tell me to come at night and jam with the DJ. My problem is I can't improvise so I never go. Let me know if you ever plan on coming to SF. I'll let you stay at my place just so I can jam with you. If you want to play at clubs and be the man of the night, I can have that arranged, too. Cheers!

Man, I sometimes feel the same, I am much more comfortable playing a rehearsed part, than improvising, but little by little you start to get the hang of it, I've gotten better by simply jamming, take some of the backing tracks from the lessons and play stuff over them, little by little it will start improving.

My name is Anthony Dughman. I'm 24 years old and have been messing around with the guitar for nearly 13 years now. Living in San Francisco, CA, life is centered around work and there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done. I'm finally getting my degree from San Francisco State University in less than 6 months. FINALLY! biggrin.gif

I'm one of those players that never really learned the guitar but could play pieces when I sat down and learned them. For example, I can play Muris's Oriental Shred with the tone control that Marcus Lavendell has. If you ask me to improvise, I'll be completely lost. I recently discovered Bill Edwards Fretboard Logic series and own all 3 books. Those books are invaluable to my knowledge bank. So now I have an understanding of the guitar and how to form chords, scales, etc... I have the technique but, I never had the knowledge. Shameful, I know. Help me get started! Cheers!!!

If know now know the scales, you should be able to play muris' oriental shred all over the neck, in any context with the same chrods.

If you don't, you don't know as much as you said.
If you do, then you are set for improv.

And welcome to GMC!!
