How many miles is it from Hartford, Connecticut to the main shopping sections of New York and how far is Bridgeport, Connecticut? What are those 2 areas like? I've decided to move to America rather than Japan and would like to live in Connecticut but not so far from New York because I want my family and friends to be able to visit easily.

driving.

Now I live in Des Moines IA. Which is about as far from Manhattan (downtown NY) as you can get. huh.gif
I'm sure traffic will play a role in all of this. As I hear NY NY is a large city. smile.gif

So, give or take 7 hours those should be accurate.

I'm going to do it for sure. I just need to decide where in Connecticut to go.

Where would people recommend? I am going to learn to drive in the UK. Buy a car in USA when I move over. Save money for the next few months and I just need to find a job. If I find a job in USA will the company likely help me with Visa stuff?

I am not at all familiar with that part of the country. I'm right smack dab in the middle. Closest big city is Chicago. (5 hours) And that is just fine for me and my family.

No idea. Hartford CT is a huge insurance town. So is Des Moines. Both myself and the wife work for monster insurance companies.

Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids IA is a big one I think. My old roomate worked there. He is a software engineer who now works for Lockheed Martin.

Cedar Rapids IA = small town life.

My ex-Father in Law worked there too as a Nuclear Hardening Engineer. Yeah..... You couldnt ask him about his day. All TOP SECRET.

I would look for the Job, and then just make sure the area I am living in is satisfactory. There are a lot of places that might fit your bill, and that would be easier places to live, where money buys more, where there are probably non-stop flights. Such as Chicago, or Atlanta. I always enjoyed downtown Chicago.

To be honest I've wanted to live in CT for a very long time. Not just for a year or so but for the last 8 or 9 years of my life. I came to USA for the first time in 1994 time I believe and ever since then I have researched USA and been interested in the place and after lots of research Connecticut came up and I like my smaller places a bit more so hence having a fascination with Bridgeport as it is smaller than the big cities in CT and it is similar to my home town in the UK.
