I just have a couple quick ?'s.

Do you need to use a dampener to play 8 Finger Tapping ?

What are the best way to approach practicing it?

Should I be playing chromatics while practicing it ?

Thanks smile.gif

Well, for full 8 fingers tapping I believe dumper is really needed.
Because you'll use your right hand pinky,
angle of your hand must be more from above and you'll not be
able to do any kind of right hand muting,
right hand muting is available if you're using everything else but pinky.

Good think would be to start with clean sound, bit compressed maybe.
Try to hear every note you're playing clearly.
Once you get more strength in your fingers it'll be piece of cake
to do it on distorted sound.
But there is a problem with distortion tho,
you'll need to apply more muting/better dampener.

And you practicing whatever you want,
7 notes scales, chromatic, arpeggios, list goes on and on. smile.gif

Depends of string action and type of dampener,
first 3 frets are probably optimal choice,
everything above takes too much of the neck imo. smile.gif

Depends from person to person,
Stanley Jordan mastered it long ago,
but I'm not sure how good he is with picking etc. smile.gif

And for damping you can use hairband, sock or something similar.

I'm far away from being master
and I use a home made dampener lately,
I have original MAB dampener tho
but it looks like space ship on headstock. rolleyes.gif

You're pushing me,I see wink.gif

Part of the dampener that touches the strings always goes over,
so you could easily pull it behind nut when you don't need it.
