MTP Compilation Exercise

Been a little while since I uploaded a lesson onto the boards, as you may know I`ve been working with a great group of guys on the Mentor Training Program, it struck me early on that I could try and do a lesson that incorporated aspects and exercises of Instructor lessons that we`d been looking at and compile it into one compact lesson for the guys to include as part of their practice routines to save a little time allowing them to concentrate on other lessons as well smile.gif

Hopefully I`ve managed to achieve what I started out to do, this is a perfect place to upload the lesson as hopefully it will benefit anyone else on GMC as well smile.gif

I`ve tried to cut the lesson down into small sections so that you can work easier on each section at a time smile.gif

On to the lesson:

Main Video

Attached File  Compilation_MTP_vid.mpg ( 23.99MB ) Number of downloads: 412

The exercise consists of elements of lessons from Instructors, Gabriel Leopardi`s Judas Priest style lesson, Marcus Siepens Metal rhythm, Muris Varajics alternate thirds and Joe Kataldos tapping lesson, I have changed bits and transposed parts to fit in with what I was doing (E minor btw)

The Breaksown:

Part 1

--------10----------------|-------------------------|--9----------------||
--------------------------|-------------------------|-------12----10----||
--------------------------|-------------------------|-------------------||

A slight variation on the Judas Priest Style lesson, a simple intro, but concentrate on timing and vibrato

Part 2

------------------------|-----------------||
------------------------|-----------------||
------------------------|-----------------||
--12----10----9----7----|--9----6----7----||

A straight repeat of the first pattern with a slightly different ending.

Part 3

Attached File  Part_3.mpg ( 9.54MB ) Number of downloads: 281

-----------------9----|-------10---------9h----|--7----4----7----*||
--3----3----7---------|--7----------7----------|-------5----5-----||
----------------------|------------------------|------------------||

This pattern above is repeated twice.

Into a variation (although ver similar) to Marcus Siepens Metal rhythm lesson, palm muting and some pull offs in the middle of the riff are the things to watch out for in this section.

Part 4

-----------------------|-------------------||
-----------------7h----|--9----------------||
--7---------7----------|-------9h----10----||

This part is played a lot easier if you just down pick only, downpicking will also give more attack on the notes.

Part 5

----------------------|---------------------||
----------------------|---------------------||

Using an idea from Muris`s lesson that we looked at, I just made a longer slightly more repetetive pattern out of it, palm muting on the first notes gives this pattern more feel, not too tricky more about timing here.

Part 6

Attached File  Part_6.mpg ( 8.03MB ) Number of downloads: 251

E||--15----12----14----------|--12----------------------|

--------------------10----|--12----14----12----10----|--------||
--10----12----14----------|--------------------------|--12----||

ANother Muris lesson here (alternate thirds), I`ve kind of chopped the pattern that Muris used in half here, thought it might mix things up a bit.

Part 7

Attached File  Part_7.mpg ( 7.63MB ) Number of downloads: 261

E||----------------------|----------------------|----------------------|

-----------------------|------------------------|--------------------------|

--------------------||
--12----------------||
--------14----12----||
--------------------||
--------------------||

Some more alternate picking, just a quick scale exercise moved around in different positions on the neck, you could chop it up a little and use pull offs/legato on the way back down as well.

Part 8

Attached File  Part_8.mpg ( 9.45MB ) Number of downloads: 221

----------------16~----14br----|--12----------||
-------------------------------|--------14----||
-------------------------------|--------------||
-------------------------------|--------------||

first half of ths pattern isnt too difficult, just palm muting on the 12th fret of the D string is important, the second half is a little trickier as you anchor on the 16th fret of the B string with your middle finger and skip on the other notes, I find picking down on the anchor note and picking the changing notes on the upstroke works the best for me in this section.

Part 9

Apologies for the vid quality on this video, I had a mishap with my halogen light and had to make do with the available light I had in the room, played appaling on this one too blink.gif

Probably the hardest part of the whole exercise, all tapped, the pattern itself is very easy, its mainly the timing and moving from string to string that makes this the trickiest part imo, inspired from our tapping assignment looking at Joe Kataldos tapping lessons.

Part 10

Attached File  Part_10.mpg ( 5.09MB ) Number of downloads: 225

---------------17----16----|--14----16----17----16----|--14----13----14----||
---------------------------|--------------------------|--------------------||
---------------------------|--------------------------|--------------------||

Finally our last section, this part almost feels like a breather after the tapping section, legato on the first three strings, finishing with alternate picking, this gives the last little run some more clarity and a better finish to the whole piece.

So there we have it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have making it, and you find it of some benefit to your regular practice routines.

All the best

Chris

Wao, awesome!

Thats an interesting idea for a lesson, a nice sounding result and really well played as well.

Lots of different technics and the difficulty level increases to the end. Something to work through like a school book. Good example how a MTP program could be structured.

thanks chris .. smile.gif

thanks guys, glad your liking it smile.gif

It took a long time to get together and to get the mix right between, not too difficult but also some challenging parts but doable (if that makes sense blink.gif laugh.gif)
