Hey RIP,
I think it will come down to how much you want to spend. But with that being said, I have a highway one strat and I love it. It's a few years old now, I think this years model has been update with different pickups, controls and some other things. I feel for the price it can't be beat. The only thing you have to be carful with is the finish, it's pretty lite and can start looking like SRV's guitar in no time. (but some people like that biggrin.gif )

I really love the Schecter diamond Series C-1. It plays like a $1500 dollar guitar and seems to be well rounded. If you get a chance to play one at a Guitar Center or Sam Ash I Would highly recommend it. The action is very good (low strings with no buzz) and has good clean sounding pickups. biggrin.gif

i personally love ibanez's, but i would steer clear of the RG42, my friends has one and it has fallen apart more than once. Im sure you could gety a better model for the same price

None of those

My advice - a Variax played through a POD XTLive and a Flat response (Keyboard) amp.

Sheer perfection and any tone you like including Acoustic and 12 string.

Go to your local shop - try one out. I promise you will be blown away by the sheer versatility of it.

If you get an Ibanez, go with one that has the Edge Pro bridge, not the Edge pro II or III. The 1st one is made of better quality metals, so it will last you longer, unlike II or III which might only last 6 months w/ heavy trem abuse. smile.gif

Thanks for the advice guys biggrin.gif , now lets see if I can answer all you guys...

Shred Cat, I'll keep that in mind, but I would probably replace the bridge with an OFR, but I didn't know that, and I will definitely keep that in mind.

fretdancer, the reason why I ask you guys is that I don't know of any guitar shop here that has a good selection of guitars. I've seen the Variax before, and it's definitely cool, but I prefer old fashioned electric guitars.

Rvddps, how has your friend's 42 fallen apart? I liked the fact that it is a Maple neck-thru with mahogany wings, neck thru guitars are supposed to be very solid, and I don't like the tone of basswood.

paperclip, yea, I've heard good things about Schecter, and I'll definitely consider that awesome C1

xhernan, I'm gonna try!

Leo T, yea, the American Fender is definitely my front runner.

Thanks for the help and keep it comin! biggrin.gif

All right I'm gonna go for a Fender, do you guys think I should go for an American strat or a Highway one strat(also made in America)?

The one you should go for is the one that "Talks" to you.

You have to try both, and try to play them for an hour or more in the store - one of them will shout "buy me buy me" to you and you will have to buy it.

If neither talk to you, neither is right - you will know the right guitar within 5 mins of picking it up and it may, in fact it will probably surprise the heck out of you. It may not be a strat at all. Be open.

When I was in exactly your position, I went to a couple of guitar shops and tried various strats - I knew I wanted a strat - so I tried every one I could from the cheapest to stuff way outta my price range - there was hardly any difference between any of them, some were better made and had more refinements but essentially they were all the same.
The best Guitar I tried and one that shocked me be how good it felt was a Telecaster. One of those had never been on my radar, I only tried it by mistake but that guitar was the one - it really spoke to me but I did not buy it. In fact I have never owned or even played a tele since. - I bought a Strat off Ebay (though I went to see and play it first) and kind of bought it on impulse. I did love that guitar for a while but it was not the one. If the Guitar don't talk to you - you will soon want one that does.
I am lucky in that I did find the perfect guitar later. When you have the perfect guitar you will know it.

Use the knowledge and desire you have only as a guide, not a hard and fast rule and try lots of different guitars - you will know whats right when you try it. Trust me you WILL know what it is when you get it in your hands. I remember you said that you dont have any guitar shops near you so I guess that makes life difficult but make the effort to try to find guitars for sale you can try.

One other thing to bear in mind, despite all logic seeming to say different - the cost of a guitar has little bearing on the sound of the guitar. If I find the web page I will link to it - but a "blind" test was carried out on 50 guitars with people voting on the sound they heard - the top 20 contained all the guitars under $500 and the 5 highest priced guitars all came lower than the top 20. The same test was done with people seeing the guitar they were voting the sound on, and the top priced guitars came top of the list !! this means people "think" the best sound comes from the highest priced and most fashionable guitars but when blindfolded the lower priced models are the ones that got voted for. Higher price means little more than a "cool" factor - and yet cool guitar players usually play beat up old things. Its amazing how influenced we all are by marketing hype. My advise is dont buy a guitar based on knowledge gained from a magazine ad. Make your own mind up. Also, Fender are the best selling brand so by asking for other peoples opinions, most people are going to say Fender because thats what they have.

Have just been searching for a link to the test described above but cannot find it now - I will keep looking.

I see what you mean, but again, I wouldn't ask you guys if I could try all the guitars I want sad.gif . All the guitars I've played at music shops haven't really blown me away, and the only shop that had Fenders doesn't let people try guitars, they have "demo" guitars blink.gif .

As for the whole price doesn't matter thing, I'd like to see that link, because my friend's Yngwie Malmsteen strat plays alot better than my other friend's Yamaha. I agree that sound character doesn't matter, I've never believed that tone came from the guitar or amp, I believe it comes from the guitarist. For me it's all about playability & quality, and a clunky tremolo, and frets that wear down fast doesn't really appeal to me. But I agree that a guitar doesn't have to be expensive to be good.

Edit: Had to get off and didn't have time to finish tongue.gif
Just to clear things up, I didn't pick Fender because of who plays it, or how cool it looks, or because it's fashionable, I picked it because when I asked a guitar player I know what guitar he would recommend, he handed me his cheap mexican strat, and it felt better than any guitar I've played before. I have always decided things for myself, don't think because I asked people for thier opinion that I don't have one of my own wink.gif . Fender sells the most guitars because they have a good reputation for quality, and alot of great players love Fender. And yes, most people will say Fender because they have one...and like it smile.gif . I just have faith in people that they won't like a badly made guitar(maybe I shouldn't?). Personally I've found that more expensive guitars are made better, and have better playability(most of the time, some cheaper guitars are very good). But I will take your advice on keeping my options open.
Thanks for the help dude! biggrin.gif

get a made in mexico strat, they're so much easier on the wallet! I bought one on ebay for 200 dollars! And it sounds great. Now don't get me wrong I'd like an american strat, but I'd buy the vintage 62 remake because they use a nitrocellulose finish like they did back in the day. All newer strats, even the srv copy, now use poly finish. I just think the nitro finish made them look so much better, showed age over time and let the wood resonate better...imo

That's cool, because the Highway 1 Strat has a nitrocellulose finish, and it's made in the US with jumbo frets, and it's alot cheaper than the American.
I think I'm coming closer to a descision, but I gotto take my time and consider all options.
So I've heard good things about the Ibanez Prestige RG, anybody have expirience with these?

OK, I'm through with stressing over what guitar to get, and I just found a geetar that I feel in love with.
The descision is almost made, if when I go to the guitar shop and none of the guitars amaze me, I'm gettin it!
