Here's a brief outline of the problems I've had with my Variax 300 since I bought it 1 year ago.

  • started making 'popping' noises when played
  • took it to a Line 6 authorized shop for repairs under warranty
  • they can't figure out the problem and they call me to come pick it up
  • I pick it up and there's a large scratch on the front of the guitar that wasn't there when I gave it to them.
  • I tell them they need to fix this problem.
  • Line 6 ships them another guitar body. They move old neck and electronics over to new body
  • Guitar is now unplayable because the neck isn't installed properly. The old battery compartment cover doesn't fit the new body. It's 2 more months before they ship me a new cover that I have to install myself.
  • I take it to another shop for set up.
  • I stop back by a couple of days later to see if it's fixed and I can see the tech with the whole guitar taken apart and he says the electronics are acting funny even though I only took it there for action adjustments. He puts the whole thing back together, but the action is still funky.
  • Now the pickup selector isn't working (and on this model, that's a huge deal)
  • I take it to another (different) Line 6 authorized dealer for repair.
  • 6 weeks later they call me to tell me that it's fixed.
  • I show up at the shop and the guy pulls it out of the case to show me the guitar and notices the action is very high, so right then and there he proceeds to fix the problem (the only bright spot in this whole deal).
  • I notice some new scratches on the guitar, but they're on the back and not as bad as from the other shop so I don't say anything and take the guitar home.
  • Mere moments ago, I plugged in the guitar to test it out. The pick up selector doesn't work and the guitar (plugged into a POD X3) has no clean tones.

Monday, I'm calling Line 6 and asking for a straight swap on guitar because this one is a lemon. I own a Variax Bass and Pod X3 Live and used to own a POD XT Live none of them gave me any trouble.

Wow !! what a story !! this is a shame of Line 6 Variax !! I have a Pod X3 and it works fine too, but once my Marshall Amp MGDFX 100 did some weird noise when I turned it on, so I take it to repair under warranty, when they gave it back to me it has a big scratch on top of it, didn't affect the sound but I was really angry about that !! but they fixed it and one month later, the problem showed up again !! Actually it was because of the fan, when I turn on my amp, I have to turn it off then turn it on like 7 or 10 times in order to make it warm up then I can play without this 'noise'

When it works, it's a very flexible instrument. I have the 300 model, which is the lowest model of Variax that they sell. It's my understanding the the electronics in all models are the same and the the 600 and 700 model just have nicer bodies and necks (and a tremolo in the 700).

Yeah, the 300 is more cheaply made than the 600 and 700 - when I played one it felt similar in quality to a Squier Strat or similar. The 700 is a better quality instrument and I haven't had any problems with mine - sorry to hear yours has been a disappointment!

Man...that is a frustrating road! I am sure Line 6 will take care of you properly. If they give you any trouble, make it clear you are a member of a worldwide guitar community. That could help sway their decision in your favor!

You can assume that if a company is not going to be decent, they are not going to be put in fear of you either. Whoever you speak to will just at that point cover his ***, meaning follow company policy without extending himself to cut you a favor, and that won't be in your benefit.

Just be nice, and ask for their help. 9 times out of 10, that is your best bet. Most companies try to make you happy, when clearly they have failed.

Well, I called Line 6 yesterday and talked to them about the problem. They asked me to re-flash the guitar electronics through Monkey to see if that didn't clear it up. I tried it and it didn't. sad.gif

They said if that didn't work, to call them back today to arrange to ship it back to them for repair/replacement. I'm working on getting my paperwork together that will hopefully sway them to replace instead of repair. (my original post didn't mention that there are two thumb-sized 'spots' on the neck)

He he, I got a Variax 300 shipped from the States and you have to wait two minutes until the first string mic contact mic starts working, I was surprised that Variax cable wasen't the ruged rj45 cable but a cheap stereo cable. Then I go and buy the cable and I found that the metalic pins of the conector or the rj45 are losse so I try to replace them but when I take out the plaste, I see the whole thing is sealed in plastic. About the cheapness, bassicaly you are buying some electronics, I´m thinking on getting a new neck and tunners, specially tuners for this one.

UPDATE: Guitar was returned to me from Line 6 late last week after a tech replaced the "pick up selector". I put a new set of strings on the guitar yesterday and sat down to play it.

Well, the "pick up selector" does in fact work. Sadly, there are still no clean tones. sad.gif I tried playing through the same settings with my strat and it sounds fine, but the Variax is still way over-driven. I'll call Line 6 again on Monday and I'll probably have to ship it back to them again.

So bad of them to keep you with the bad fruit mate. You should ask them for a straight replacement and threat to sue them because the guitar is not in working condition.
