"Guitar Meditation".

This is not a secret or an instant way to become better at guitar. But doing this while playing will make you sound much better, I guarantee you. Ready? Then let's get started.
First, let me explain the science behind this. The temporal lobe of the brain, the part which controls memory, is closely connected to the back part of your frontal lobe, which controls volontary movement. Many of the movements that you carry out are mimics of images conserved in your brain of previous movements. This affects guitar in this way: while you are playing and soloing, which involves improvisation, nothing new inside your brain is going on. Your brain is simply putting different parts of the same puzzle in a different order. Let's say you learn three licks, A B and C. Neurons in your brain (Brain cells) will connect in your temporal lobe after a while, and it will become a memory of these licks. When you solo, your brain connects your temporal lobe to your posterior frontal lobe, and your fingers arrange the solo in a certain format. The main point of this paragraph is to say this: YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO PLAY LONG BEFORE YOU PLAY IT. Your brain can organize A, B, and C any way it wants to, and it already has.
Here's where the actual technique comes in: When soloing, your subconsciousness arranges the patterns, but it is not a strong mimic in your temporal lobe. Therefore, your posterior frontal lobe does not recieve a clear image of what to tell the fingers to play, and your fingers might get confused, pull the wrong string, etc... This accounts for almost every single mistake good players make: they aren't paying attention to what they are playing. So, instead, before you pick up the guitar, take three deep breaths. Then, start playing a very simple bass chord, or even one note. Then, visualise a lick in your mind and play back the exact movements of all the fingers in your head. Then, perform the lick after having visualised it. If you keep doing this, you will notice your playing is not as sloppy as it used to be, and your tone has improved. If you do this every time you play/practice, your brain will be able to visualise the licks faster, and you will be able to play licks almost instantaneously.

Very interesting topic Roko , thanks for sharing. I would call it visualization instead of meditadion , and it is a very useful skill not only for guitar but for a lot of things. Golf players use this technique a lot.

I try to visualize notes and patterns in advance all the time. Through constant doing this, it becomes a well crafted skill, so you can pull out combinations fast. But I can't visualize fast enough all the time. It's more of a putting into action somekind of a "concept" of the solo. Of course when you learn more and more licks, the number of combinations increases exponentially so it is easier to put into action the thoughts. By removing thinking about where are the notes, brain is free to think what is going to play in advance.

Key to do this is to actually know where are the notes that you imagine in your head, and know it well.

Visualization is a great approach, but in my case it kinda helps more when learning separate licks. Otherwise, as you said, grasping the concept of the solo is the key. (and a concept includes the visual outlook of the notes as well as the sound or the tension and rythm of music itself)
