Hey guys, well after a few years of practicing exercises and using different practice schedules to improve my speed im getting confused with which way is the best and wondering if someone could share there ways of getting to where they are now. John Petrucci explains on the 'Rock Discipline' dvd a way of practicing by getting a exercise and then playing it for half an hour, starting slow and then getting to a top speed with many repetitions in that practice session.

Ive been doing this for a while and seeing good results, but I read a topic by Pedja on practicing and his method is playing an exercise for only 2-3 minutes then moving onto another one. Am I worrying about this a bit too much? should I just get on with playing? With all of this great material on gmc im just eager to know the most efficient way to practice and maximize the progress over time in my sessions! If anyone has any comments I would appreciate it

thanks you smile.gif

Everybody learns diffrent, just play and you will see progress. Don't focus too much on how much time to spend on what - Just practice the things you want to be better at

I would practice songs/solos. I think this keeps it interesting. Most of the lessons on GMC can be broken down into excercises if you can't play a certain lick up to speed. I have done both Pedja's and Petrucci's method and I like Pedja's better. Then if you take Pedja's method and apply it to specific licks that you are trying to learn it keeps it more interesting. I don't know about you but I can't play a boring excercise for 30 minutes for months at a time. I need to be working on songs/solos to keep it fun and have some sort of payoff when you get that particular lick mastered. Just my 2 cents biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Yeah I agree totally, most the exercises that I practice over and over are fragments of solos which im working on so that when youve got them down, you can play the whole thing smile.gif

I also think that everybody has his own way of practicing. You said that so far you followed Petruccis way and you saw good results, so obviously his way works fine for you, so why change it? Of course you can try other ways too, like this you can compare them and maybe find a way that feels better for you, but as long as you clearly see a progress I don't see why you should change your way of practicing.

That's true definitely. Try out several practicing schedules and see what works best for you. There is no universal practice schedule. If you see that you are advancing, don't stray from that path smile.gif

This is what my schedule look like.
I can't practice everything in one session but I just choose a few depending on the mood I am.
Of course this is the way it works for me. Everyone must find what suits better for themselves.

When I used to practice 6 or 7 hours a day (sometimes up to eleven hours) and I liked a lot all the metal my schedule was something like this:

-5min an exercise of finger independence (to warm up)
-5min stretching ex. to stretch the middle, ring and pinky fingers
-15min the arpeggios of the Smoke and Mirrors (Symphony X) intro (I used to play them with alternate picking instear the sweeping)
-10min the guitar solo from Erotomania (dream theater)
-30min various solos of Michael Romeo (Sea of lies, Of sins and shadows, etc)
-30min an acoustic progression of arpeggios of a Richie Kotzen song (I don't remember the name now)
-30min the flight of the bumblebee

And a lot of stuff that I don't remember now sad.gif (it was a long time ago)

So I had some short practice and some long practice, I guess you could say that I played both ways

did you play 6 hours consecutively or break it up, say 3 sessions of 2 hours?

I played for 6 or 7 hours a day with little breaks of 10 min or 15 min.

I know that the schedule that I've written is no longer than 2 hours but as I've said I can't remember the other things that I used to practice sad.gif

I'll post them.. if I remember.

you say it was a long time ago... do u mean you never really practice intensly anymore? Once youve mastered your technique do you not really have to do exercises to keep your speed up, or does general playing keep you in shape?

I think once you get your technique to a certain level you pretty much just have to maintain it which doesn't take near the time it does to develop it. I know I'll go months without playing some difficult songs I've learned and you might have to polish them for a few days but for the most part they come back to your fingers pretty quickly. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

To me, ive always found i enjoy guitar most when im learning a solo/song instead of practicing exercises (i imagine most of us are like this) Plus, if you like challenging enough music (like petrucci) then im sure your going to have to learn new techniques and play exercises in order to be able to master the solos anyways...so i would say i agree with the 2-3 minute thing
