hey gmc,

Last few months I'm playing about 3-4hours a day practising lots of bendings and vibo's and I'm feeling that I'am progressing a lot.

Two weeks ago I felt a lil pain spike through my ring finger of my left hand so I thought I needed a break for a day and the next day it felt like it was cured. Three days ago I felt again a lil pain spike through my ring finger so I toke about 10mins rest then after I started again I felt this time a huge painspike I thought this is not good.
From now of on I'm walking arround with a ring finger that hurts when i'm pressing at somthing sad.gif bending my finger doesnt hurt but only pressing my fingertop its realy anoying pain.

My question is if anyone has experienced this
What do you guys have to say about this? is this normal? ohmy.gif
what whould be your advise?

I'm hoping every morning that the pain is away so i can play the guitar again sad.gif
I am so bored now couse i cant play :< i'm such a sad panda atm

(hopefully this is the right forumboard to put this in)

ive had this before matey, feels like a knife cutting right through right? This is usually fromto much stress on either the muscles, bone, or the nerves. in ur case i would problem say muscle because of the vibratos and such. I am no doctor so i am not responsible for anything but what u should try to do is switch the angle at which you execute ur ring finger strikes. like instead of playing with the point, play on the fatty pad or something. fool around with it until it subsides. in the meantime try drinking lots of water to replenish ur muscles and get back in the game haha

Remember i am not a doctor so i am not responsible for any advice i give here. i just merely said what worked for me and ur case maybe different

kk?

That happenned to me a few weeks ago after practicing a lesson with lots of bendings, I forced my ring finger too much and when I touched something it felt like a needle on the tip of the finger. I stopped playing that day, let it rest, and next day the pain was almost gone, and after 48h it was completely gone.

I'd say give it some rest, and if it continues go see a doctor just in case. It's probably nothing serious, so don't worry too much wink.gif

Something like this should definitely be taken serious. It seems that you just "overused" your finger, all those bends might have used your muscles too much. Taking a break is for sure a good thing, but I would also recommend seeing a doctor, just to be sure. If you want to restart your practicing, make sure that you properly warm up (I can't mention enough that this is SO important) and stop immediately if the pain comes back.

I agree with Marcus you seem to overused your ring finger when bending and vibrating. These exercises should be always done with extra care, as they put the biggest amount of strain on the fingers - I never practice more than 20 minutes at a time doing these before making a pause.

I also had similar problems when doing long sessions, but the problem went away after couple of weeks. I suggest that you don't play too much guitar in this period, and specially do not do the same exercises that led you to your state now.

Also if the problem still remains after one month and you weren't practicing that much, then consult a doctor, cause they usually know what is the best thing to do in such occasions.

go to see a doctor looks to be defently a good plan, will do that.

about the warmups, i never do them cause i thought its not nessacery. Seems to be that was stupid ohmy.gif (I am the guy that most times need to learn it the hard way hehe)
most times i just start kind of warmup by starting slow on a song and then go faster and faster.

thanks alot for the reply's.

playing now without using my ringfinger, but that finger whants to touche the string and play, so its realy hard to not use it laugh.gif

No problem mate we are glad to help. BTW you can do a lot of exercises w/o the ring finger, and they can do you good as well. Lots of times when you use only limiter amount of fingers you get new ideas if you know what I mean. Your decision to go to a doctor is a wise one - tell us how it went mate. Good luck.

doctor told me to give it a rest and see how it goes the next week.
It looks like the pain in my finger is defently not as painfull as it was last week. I can even play abit again with my finger, and seems it is even stronger then ever biggrin.gif

still slighty some pain so playing too much is not a good idea I think.
Bit scared of my ringfinger, dont want to have it go back in the same status it was 1,5week ago. I will probaly have this feeling for a long time :>

Atleast i am glad that i can play "normal" again, and Warmup your fingers before playing is defently what i will do now forever wink.gif

Thanks for all the help!
Cheers!

Yeah, rest is always the best option in the case of pain. If it persists see a doctor.

Remember odd things might happen to your hands (and vary from person to person) when learning the guitar.
Have you ever noticed the weird stuff your hands have to do on the guitar at the best of times!

Check out Tuck Andres for example, there's no ways that hands are designed to do that normally;)

Take it slow, it all comes with patience and time, keep it up.

Warmups are the best antidote for something like this.. I especially like Marcus' warmup lesson =)

I experienced this at one point (no pun intended, seeing as this is a finger problem). I took a week off, and started off slowly again, with playing only a few minutes a day to make my fingers getting used to play again.

Be careful!

Perhaps that pain was a natural way for your organism to say:"stop don't play and let your fingers rest a bit". Just don't play for a while mate and it will be OK. Also in the future, never do such extensive workouts and put much strain on fingers. Just take it easy, and watch your fingers more mate.

One other thing is too make sure you're bending it the correct way, as you build up strength it gets alot easier, but some type of bends done incorrectly can do enough damage too break the finger.

hope it gets better soon smile.gif

Over the past 2 years ive had this problem alot, i go through periods where i have pain in my fingers and its always when i practice intensive. I realise now whats going on and put my guitar down for a few days and when i pick it back up i warm up slowly before any speedpicking and Im usually good to go smile.gif Luckily I have never injured myself so my advice to you is to back off for a short period if your really in pain and concentrate on warm ups smile.gif

Do not play through the pain.... stop playing entirely until you can play free of pain (wrapping the finger in ice daily would be a good idea too) If it does not go away or comes back, see a doctor immediately. Oh and did I mention... DO NOT PLAY THROUGH THE PAIN!

I agree with the rest of the replies, this has happened to me a few times and just make sure to do some exercises before and after you start to play (like sports)
