hey guys,

I spent all of last night, rendering a video into various differnt file types, I`m a totally useless with this kind of thing, ie. I have no idea what the codecs mean or do etc, compression etc, I`ve not got a clue blink.gif

so heres the dilema and what I`m after doing, anyone that can help and put this into idiot proof terms for me I`d much appreciate it biggrin.gif

I use Vegas and normally for the SI videos render into mpg2 using the settings that Vegas uses as default (not at home so cant actually post those settings for the mo, soz) anyways, when I upload these videos to youtube, the quality totally degrades and they look rubbish, the audio quality also suffers quite badly too, using Siggums code he gave us to add to the end doesnt make any difference to the quality sad.gif

Can anyone explain to me the best file formats, codecs, bitrates etc to install and use to get a reasonable quality youtube video? and not blind me with science at the same time laugh.gif

I am most interested in this too Chris. Youtube states that maximum file size you can upload is 100mb. In Elements, I can render in hd quality with high resolution which I can compress to the max size. Will uploading the larger file help with the quality after it goes through youtube's processing?

Xvid is good I believe! Basically you gotta look for FPS and bitrate.

You don't need high resolution for these videos. 450x450ish is enough!
I believe it's about codec used+bitrate.

I am not a pro though smile.gif

Chris I don't know much about this , but what made a nice improvement in my youtube videos is leaving them in .avi format , the quality is way better than mpg.

Also youtube is allowing big files (1 gb) , so you don't have to compress them.

yea, I think its as Kjutte said, its alot to do with the bitrate etc, I tried .avi but it was as poor, so I guess that was down to the defaults for .avi rendering in vegas that needs to be changed?

These are the specifications I use in vegas and the output file is .avi:

Audio: 48.000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, PCM Uncompressed.
Video: 29,97 fps, 720x480, Lower field first.
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 0,909.

Also check your cammera and set it in : 30 fps , 640x480

Is it possible to get some youtube example links to know what you guys define as good or bad quality?
I have a good collection of video compression/conversion tools. So i could help out if needed or at least do some test.

I'd be really interesting in those vegas settings. Also I always have a problem with synchronization, everything's fine when I render it but after youtube processing some latecny appears. Do you know which codecs etc should I use to fix this?

Chris, the video degrades because YT does a FLV conversion of the files, no matter quality your source file is. The way around this is to try to use native FLV formta. There's a free flv converter called Moyea Video4Web converter, that can convert any video to FLV at different bitrates. Try rendering a good quality video in vegas, and then try converting it to a good quality in FLV and upload on YT. I think this will do the trick.
