Practicing some sweep picking with distortion on has made me notice that when I play the 7th fret on the A string it rings the E string even thought I havnt plucked it. On a closer look it actually rings the harmonic on the E string, as if I had touched the 12th fret lightly and let go, because I can place my finger on the 12th fret on the E string and it carries on ringing (an indication that either side of the string is ringing independently).

I hope that wasnt too confusing... Any ideas whats causing this and how I can stop it?

Muting the E string with your right hand should get rid of it.

Can you palm mute it perhaps as Matt suggested?
