What Next Options

hi,

I joined GMC last week and its awesome. I was wondering what i should learn next. I've been playing for 3 years and i know all the modes, major/minor pentatonic, circle of fifths, and right now im taking a beginning guitar class at my school because i never learned treble clef, it also covers a few chord progressions. The songs that i learned last month were crazy train, manhattan, and cliffs of dover. I have 5-6 hours to practice each day, usually 1-2 hours of that is technique. what next?

First of all welcome to GMC Joe!

It sounds like you are in intermediate area leaning toward advanced.
May I ask , are you composing or writing original material for somebody ? Perhaps arranging even popular songs that you play ?

In general , if you have done repertoire of songs that you are pleased with (like manhattan cliffs of dover etc) then you should start perhaps working on your original voice in music.
Ear Training, Composing, Arranging, Recording - these seem to me only logical things to do next.
Also a very important thing is Harmony and Theory . How are you in that area?
Maybe you should start with some Melodic minor , or work on specific Modal Harmonies from previous scales?

I would love to see you or hear your playing over BLUES for like 5 minutes. That will give me a lot of ideas regarding advices. And with blues you don't have to play regular blues, I mean take it to the next level with arpeggios chord tones chromaticism etc.

For now thats my advice and I await your recording for more detailed work.

right now i only know 1st pos treble clef so im not ready to write yet, but i do improvise every day on scales and make up tunes from time to time. for ear training is the best way to approach it by learning songs by ear, or memorizing the sounds of notes in scales. as for recording, i dont have anything to record myself with except my phone, im 15 and im looking for a job so i can buy a video recorder. ive played alone my entire life so i havent even touched on harmony. For theory ive learned the circle of fifths, but thats it. I enjoy the blues, but what i love to play is jazz and rock. ive learned the jazz etude, jazz licks lesson, js bach preludium no.2, and im currently practicing the advanced mixolydian soloing lesson to improve my sweeps which are weak.

I would recommend getting more into Theory and Harmony as it will definitely help you develop in Jazz area.
Start with major and minor scale and its modes. After that move to Harmonic + Melodic minor and their modes.
Make every lesson and topic fun so when learning a new mode create a tune in that specific mode. Also it would be useful to play everything in 12 keys , so you don't get stuck with couple of familiar keys - especially when working on Harmony !

I have some jazz lessons out , there will be more in the future. I suggest you go trough them as there is a lot of interesting Harmony and Theory points in there that will get you to another level.

Regarding ear training , you need to apply both methods!
By learning songs by ear you develop sense for specific intervals which are very limited once you get a hang of it !
By learning sounds of modes and scales you get opportunity to do all the intervals up and down + sing them before you play them , so you lock them in your ear and can use them in improvising later
