Hi there guys!

This might have been a subject before, but the clock is almost 3. AM, so I`m to tired to search for it tongue.gif

I have an old Aria Strat guitar which I`ve already given a little custom paintjob. Last night I watched a video on youtube about how to scallop your fretboard, and became excited about and wanted to try it out myself.
My question is, are there some things I should be really careful about? For instance damaging the fret wires etc.
And after I`m done scalloping, should I just finish the neck by using really fine sandpaper? I thought about lemon oil, but it says on the bottle that it ain`t recommanded on maple necks.

Please give me a helping hand and help me avoid screwing up the guitar biggrin.gif

I found this guide quite helpful for scalloping:

We'll I think you have to be really carefull. Because, you see even on full maple necks there are two wooden boards, it means when you scallop too much you can actually break the front board.

I`m now done with scalloping the frets from 12-22. Took me roughly about 2 1/2 overs (matched nicely with the Chaos in Motion dvd biggrin.gif )
The fret`s did not become 100 % straight compared to eachother, but seems fine enough for me (even though one of them almost/did make it through the entire front board as enforcer warned me about. I also managed to rip a lot of the masking tape and one some occasions touch the frets with my file as I was grinding, that actually made me quite furious since none of the people who has posted guides on the internet managed this dry.gif

I barely started with some 40 sandpaper and will take another round with it tomorrow biggrin.gif

And a warning to folks with no/low patience who are planning this operation, DON`T!

I just scalloped my OLP guitar a few weeks ago and i agree with you .. patience is needed smile.gif

I just wanted a really small scallop, only to have a better grip. I only used sandpaper and not a file. It's definitely longer like this. As i do some pencil painting from time to time, i have had these little round paper sticks (see picture) to do the basic shape, which are normally for erasing pencil strokes. After i used just my finger with sandpaper.

I didn't worried so much about the frets as they needed to be changed anyway. This was a first test, so i protected them a bit with tape and managed to not damage them. I think with sandpaper only you have more control and the risk to hit the frets is lesser, but surely more time consuming and i'm not sure how this will work on rosewood or other dark wood fretboards.

I definitely suggest you to put some oil when you are finished. I didn't do it and after a few weeks, the fretboard is already dirty. I changed the frets after as well on which i still have to work (rounden the ends of the frets ), but i wanted to play it for a while to see if the frets are well in place, so i didn't put oil for now. I guess i have to clean it with sandpaper again.

It's awesome to play with this small scallop, it's not necessary to go too deep in my opinion.

I planed to write a complete review about scalloping and fret change, but didn't had the time by now. Will work on this soon ..

Here are some photos ...

Sure, i did a lot of pictures during the different steps. I still have in mind to write a tutorial of both, scalloping and fret change. I used really simple and cheap tools, can be interesting if someone wants to do something similar.
