I wrote the piece of music this piece of music (attached) after learning how to fingerpick "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac, it has a similar picking pattern, and begins on the same chord... but I didnt want to be too close to that song so I did my best to stay away from it.... well it turns out I landed on a different song!

several of my friends have pointed out that it sounds like "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas... well I didn't have a listen to that song until now... and yes it does sound very much like it.... at least the beginning part

have a listen here

oh well, hopefully Kansas won't sue me tongue.gif laugh.gif

Took me less than a second to recognize the Dust in the Wind melody at the start smile.gif

But I recognize your thing 100%, for me it's actually quite common when I write something that at a certain moment I think .... hmmm just sounds just too familiar smile.gif

It was particularly frustrating when I was at a New year's party last night... and I borroed my friends guitar, and was playing to myself upstairs... and I was playing my tune, and then some friends come up stairs and said

"What song is that?"

So I explained to them, how I wrote it, but how I recently found out that it sounds just like Dust in the Wind...

So then another person comes up stairs, and he hears me playing my tune, and just walks by singing

"I closssse myyyyyyy eyes...."

I was like WHAT THE HECK!!!!

not fair!! laugh.gif

It only reminds Dust in the wind during one chord , why don't you just change the melody you are playing over the chord in that part ? Its rather just those 3 notes in that particular order that make it sound similar..If it wasn't for that part it wouldn't remind me of that song at all..

edit: It happens to me from time to time, though I usually either recognize by myself instantly the similarities in composing process, when other get to hear it it may be too late for change..Either way it only gets similar in small portions , I try to identify what parts/notes make it similar and than change it to something else..Its really easy to change a small part of the song and it will be better to be sure it won't sound "like stolen" to somebody in the audience than to leave it off with a "questionable" (in originality sense) part..

Haha, that happens to everybody once in a while I guess biggrin.gif
As late as two days ago I found out that a piano tune I made was pretty much the same as a children's song that my grandma uses to sing, at least she did when I was younger tongue.gif

Also, another annoying thing is that when you make a melody that sounds familiar to something else, it's often just those notes that you have to change that makes the melody catchy blink.gif
