Hi,

I have a problem with recording Audio and MIDI. Well in fact the problem is that I can't get the MIDI track to be played. I can only hear the Audio tracks. I have tried the most simple thing where I added a MIDI track, set it up with the GM drum map, added some simple hi-hats and then recorded an audio track (one guitar track). When I now try to playback the MIDI and Audio track I can only hear the Audio track.
The setup I have is:
- Windows Vista
- Cubase LE4
- EMU Tracker Pre USB2
- POD 2

The attached picture shows the setup in Cubase LE4 for the EMU tracker Pre sound interface:

However if I would to change the ASIO driver to the "ASIO Directx Full Duplex" driver then both MIDI and Audio is working fine but then I also get a latency of approx 300... So that's no good smile.gif

Any ideas where the problem may be in this case?

Thanks!

That problem is quite normal and you have nothing to worry about.
You should download Asio4All drivers on internet and latency will be as minimal as it gets and will play both audio and midi no problem.

Thanks for the tip Pedja! However that didn't work either smile.gif I still can't get both MIDI and Audio even when selecting the Asio4All driver...
I did however notice that Asio4All showed a "red flag" for the output channel of my E-MU tracker sound device. This happened when I selected both devices to be active at the same time, but I guess that's not a normal scenario right?

Any more ideas where to check?

Thanks!

Did you select the output of the MIDI track to the GM instrument? smile.gif

I actually found away to "solve" this. Instead of a MIDI track I added a VST track and then used a Gm map to get the sound from this. I guess the problem remains that I can't get MIDI and Audio at the same time but then again I guess I don't need that anymore smile.gif

Many many thanks for your help and input guys!

Hmmm I have a toneport UX2 usb and it can't playback midi (it doesn't have midi banks), so If I was to choose it as you did it in recording software,it wouldn't playback the midi tracks just audio ones too..

When you choose the asio full duplex driver sound goes through your PC's internal sound card and not through your EMU sound card..so that's why you can hear the midi tracks...
IF you were to assign VST's (virtual instruments) to particular tracks , like assigning EZdrummer to the drum midi track you should be able to hear sound.

Though you can try one thing (using that EMU card for all the sound on your pc) , here is a copy-paste on the post I wrote how to do that with toneport , just replace the toneport with your EMU sound card and you should be able to do the same..

Glad you solved your problem mate..I use toneport so if you have any more questions about it shoot smile.gif
Here are some tips regarding its use...You already know it acts like a sound card , so that means your PC's internal sound card doesn't have use in the recording/playback process. What I would suggest is using toneport as your sound card in PC all the time..You can plug in your PC speakers into the Toneports either headphones out , or monitor outs (use proper adapters to make them fit in)...Next you should go to my computer >control panel> sounds and audio devices and than under the Audio tab find sound playbacks default device and choose your toneport...

Here is the picture of that :

Be sure to choose toneport ux1 for playback and recording devices and down under the MIDI part choose the Microsoft Synth because toneport doesn't have its midi banks and doesn't output midi...But if you choose the one like in the picture you will be able to hear midi through toneport...

Using toneport as your primary sound card is practical and after all - sounds better than the internal PC's sound card..

Hope some of this info helps in the future...

________

Hope you can apply some of this in solving your problem...

EDIT: you may also try assigning the midi track to Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth in your recording software (as its output device)...

Hi Bodgan

I wonder if you can help as I am new to recording.

I use Toneport UX2 and reaper.

I would like to be able to copy backing tracks from GMC lessons to reaper so that I can record my jams with them. I am sure that when I listen to myself in this way it will help my playing.

So far I have been unable to get the GMC backing int reaper.

Thanks dry.gif

Hello!!

Here is info on how to import backing tracks you have on your PC (in mp3 or wav and some other formats) into Reaper for recording and jamming..First you need to have the backing track you are going to play over saved on your PC..GMC collaborations have downloadable backing tracks..Backing tracks found in lessons online are NOT downloadable and only way to get them is to send a Private Message (or request on the instructor board) to the Instructor that made the lesson..I'm sure if you ask politely that he will help you and upload the downloadable track into the forum..

Ok here is info on how to import such track into reaper..

Open reaper , go to the Insert tab > and click on Media File...Browse for the backing track saved on your PC , choose it and click OPEN..A new audio track with a backing track will open inside the reaper...You can then make another audio track to record your solo over the backing track...

Here is the picture of that :

Hope this helps..

Ask if you have any more questions!! smile.gif

Cheers

The problem is not in drivers man, the problem is in VST instruments!

You need a VST instrument to play the MIDI track. Assigning GM drum map will not do anything it's just MIDI map of the notes for the drum not VST.

Install a drum VST, or add a simple LM drum in Cubase. Press F11, choose drum VST, and add it to the MIDI track output to the left . You should be able to hear the MIDI notes then.

Hope this helps mate smile.gif
