So I switched my electric guitar for a bass but since I dont have one of my own and I can use someone else her bass at repetitions I'll need to buy one.

Now I dont need a master amp because I have one at our repetition local.
It would be great to have a decent bass but I dont want to pay to much money.

So can someone say me what brands etc ... would be great to purchase?

Here is some info on what I recommend as a good bass for smaller amount of money..

Well only bass that has a great quality/price ratio in my opinion would be Peavey bass.(From what I tried here in Serbia). Its not because why I play one , just I couldn't find better ratio with other basses..
Now I heard very good things about Millennium series and also Grind series.Grind series sounding better!

If its a starter bass I would recommend this one :
http://www.zzounds.com/item--PEVMILBXP4 - Has versions starting at (finish differences) $239.95
This bass sounds cool and its a passive one.

Here is the active version :
http://www.zzounds.com/item--PEVMILACBXP4

And here is the Grind Series bass (which is a little better):
http://www.zzounds.com/item--PEVGRNTB4

Active bass can give you more volume, versatility and control over the sound..But keep in mind that these basses consume 2 9V batteries and if its same with all peaveys they EAT batteries in one week of playing so its a real hustle to change them all the time..But the sound is better..

These are budget basses...Your budget fits with Fender Jazz Bass (Mexican) also - so its another option too...Those Mexican fenders can get very good especially if you upgrade them with better pickups and electronics later on...

Please try out a bass in a store (and compare possible choices)..Listen to how it sounds , pay attention to neck size if its comfortable and mostly on action if can be lowered enough..You don't want to be digging around that bass when playing.Try out those peaveys mentioned , compare them to Grind bass and than to Fender and see which one you like..

Hope you find this info useful! smile.gif

Thanks for help!

Tomorrow I'll go to the local musicshop, I dont have the money ready atm but I want to have it as soon as possible.
Would it be good to buy a jumpstart package?

BTW: couldn't I play over my amp for my electric guitar at home?

I don't know about those jumstart packages ? Which one ?? They are usually a bad choice for the money..They cost more and don't have good gear inside...

And yes you can play a little on your guitar amp , but I suggest getting a DI unit like behringer BDI-21 and playing on headphones or speakers connected to it..

I think I'll buy the Peavey Millennium Bass 4 Quilt Top BXP Electric Bass I really like it! And I can play with a headphone indeed!

BTW: if I should take the one with the case, do you know if that's a decent case?

Sorry to highjack the thread a little bit, but I'm also going to buy a cheap bass soon, mainly to record simple bass lines.

Bogdan, I tried a Squier P-bass at my local store the other day, around 280€, sounded OK to me, though I know nothing about basses laugh.gif, what do you think of squier bass?

Also, I don't plan on getting any amp, but play it through my X3, hope that works fine too smile.gif

Cool I heard that bass and it sounds cool! Regarding the case , I really don't know which one they supply , maybe you can email the store ?? Anyway , I use a cheap plastic universal case for my needs and its cool so far (gigged many times) , I think that one should be as good as the one I'm using...Especially if its made specifically for that bass..But email the store and ask which case they supply.

EDIT:

that behringer bdi-21 should be cheap and it will allow you to dial in great bass tones ready for recording. Also it allows you to play through headphones or speakers...You just plug in your bass in it and dial in the tone...

Hmm Squier , depends which model..The cheapest ones are not that good...They are good as any import "no famous name" basses stores sell here..But thats just for the cheapest series (affinity), other ones can sound cool...From cheap basses that sound good I can really recommend Peavey ones, maybe Ibanez...

Now regarding the P-bass , I would recommend getting a Jazz Style bass with two single coil pickups...That bass will give you much more versatility and sounds than the P-bass...So if you're beginning and recording it may be better to get a jazz style bass.

p.s. I heard good things about Classic Vibe Series of Basses from Squier , something like this maybe :

Cheers

I have a Peavey Grind Bass and I have to say it's incredible how good the quality of the wood and crafting is BUT it does not sound very good imo! It sounds dull and flat and the sound can't be altered much because it has no onboard eq... it's still the best quality for the price. The squier basses sound A LOT better but you can feel the cheap woods and parts they were using...

Great choice mate, Millenium series are pretty good bang for buck. Also while in the store, I strongly recommend that you check out Grind Series. That is one hell of a bass, and it is great value for money IMO.

I went to the local music store and the vendor is going to order one for me. It comes to €224 so €20 more expensive then if I buy it online but I prefer a good service far above the €20 less.

Oh that one has 1xP style and one Jazz style pickup so its cool..It will give you more versatility..I haven't tried one here but it should be ok...But when you are in the store try out some other basses too , to have a comparison what is good sounding and what isn't..

Of course and you can test the bass in store and everything..I think you will be satisfied with it and I really can't think of something else for that price.
