So I have been working on my little solo for Emir's collaboration and I can't figure out why my tone sounds so staticy. Like the signal is too hot, but it doesn't seem to be peaking out on the meter. I am so retarded when it comes to recording that I don't even know how to refer to things. laugh.gif I am going straight out of my line 6 spider amp into a fast track and into my computer. I am using garageband. Any suggestions on what to do to get rid of that static would be appreciated. I'm so retarded. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif Thanks.

It sounds like my line 6 does.

I have the little 8" practice amp.

How close are you to your pc? The guitar might be picking up some static from the computer. Try turning away from it or moving back a bit. Might not be the problem but this will happen if you are to close.

I'm really not a pro in recording, but it sounds like you use lots of distortion in your sound and it easily sounds digital when using too much. I reduce it more and more because of this. To much distortion kills dynamic in my opinion as well.

Try to integrate the solo more in the backing. The guitar is to loud i think.
Add a bit of reverb, similar to the reverb used in the backing.

Beside the mixing issue it's a great take Monte smile.gif

oh btw, in the timeline of GarageBand you have a little purple triangle, which marks the end of the song. Drag this to the end of the backing. Then your mp3 file will finish at this point smile.gif

Maybe thats it. I am right next to it. I always get this static and it drives me nuts!! I'll try that when I get home. Thanks Steve!!

Thanks for the both suggestions wrk, I'll try all of these. I have A LOT to learn about recording, but that is why I am here. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Monte so happy you are getting started on recording !

I share opinion with Andy - you need to lower the gain and guitar sound a bit in the final mix.

Check your guitar cable into amp and out. Also the input into your laptop or mac (I assume its Mac since you use garage band smile.gif might be bad - so try another one.

Another thing that comes to my mind is - try to change Pickup you are using ! Maybe that pickup has some noise depending on the sitting position (like Skennington mentioned !)

Hope that helps Monte smile.gif

I won't have a chance to tweak it until the morning, otherwise my wife said she would ground me from my guitar. biggrin.gif She used to threaten to withold sex, but then she discovered that as I get older that I have become a "sex camel" so threatening to ground me from the guitar seems to be more effective. laugh.gif laugh.gif I'll let you know tomorrow. Thanks for asking!!

I think it sounds good, you played it great, but the sound is a bit compressed mate. Try to record with less distortion, cause it will add up in the mix later. When you record with less overdrive you will preserve dynamics. Also I'm not sure about the static sound. Did you record on single pickups? Perhaps that's the part of the problem.

Will do Ivan. I'm gonna give it another shot this weekend and try and finish it up. Thanks for all the suggestions everybody. biggrin.gif Hopefully I can figure this recording thing out eventually!!

Well, I'm almost following the same route when recording except for using toneport. I have this problem a lot and it can be irritating when you're used to good amp sounds. In this case it's definitely the line6 amp which causes the problem. It really can't handle too much distortion. even without compressor it sound like it's compressed... and even though your signal might be alright (and according to my experience garageband certainly does not affect the tone) after a certain amount distortion it gets too much "filled" up and there's no "room" remaining for dynamics...

So maybe less distortion, bit more reverb (and also: not too much bass or mids). cool.gif

I believe that the sound is very good, you play very well! Investigate little more on the sound and you were achieving a great result in the final mix!
But ... really I like the sound! (My opinion)

I used to have the same problem with my Spider.
That's what I used for all my older lessons. I recorded direct out of the amp into my soundcard.
Lowering the gain should help.
I'm looking forward to some new sound clips!

You can lower the gain a little but the magic touch is this:

After recording it, apply a eq to your recorded guitar channel, and eradicate 5kHz, beware not to use a high Q setting, you should only drop 5k +/- 50 Hz, not all the frequencies around. That takes away pretty much cheesy cheap static guitar sound. I use it that way. Give it a try. biggrin.gif

by the way your solo is great buddy!

It's cable, it's looks like that cable. I agree with Ivan, record a new take with less distortion.
