I'm considering a new amp. I've read several of the posts regarding amp purchases.
I'm still a bit lost. I need something for practicing at home. I need something that sounds warmer than my
current amp. And one thing that annoys the crap out of me is when I play open chords with distortion they sound like complete crap. I know some will say that's why they use power chords, but there are plenty of songs out there with distortion and open chords and they sound just fine. And if I play a guitar I should be able to play any note or chord in any manner I feel like smile.gif without having to sacrifice quality of sound.

My current lame home amp is a Marshall MG10cd.
Current guitar is an Epiphone Les Paul Studio

On the electric I play alot of things like Dokken, Ratt, Judas Priest, Zakk Wylde, Vai,etc... alot of what some of you would call hair metal. I call it real music smile.gif

Looking for something maybe in the $200-$400 range if that's possible for a decent amp.

So if someone could maybe give me some basic knowledge to start in the right direction I would REALLY appreciate it.

THANKS!!!

You won't get a tube amp for that money but a good modeler is also nice. Try this one:

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product...-Amp?sku=482910

Great rock and metal tones and also great effects; sounds good on lower volumes and can get really loud to if you want it to be hehe^^.

Thanks for the reply. Checking it out now. I'm not opposed to spending more. It would just mean waiting a bit longer. Any suggestions on decent tube amps without breaking the bank?

vyper is cool and would be a good choice but here are my recommendations
for $550 I have a real tube amp. ORANGE TINY TERROR. it's amazing. three knobs but im telling you it will not disappoint. It's a humble 15 watt but that's 80% the volume of a 30 watt tube amp just so you know. It takes pedals well so you could set it for medium gain, use your volume knob to clean it up, and grab a nice ibanez tubescreamer or anything nice really to push it over the top. But you'd need a cab if you got the head. combos still great though. send me a msg and ill tell you more smile.gif
http://orangeamps.com/products.asp?Action=List&Cat=7

OR

id also recommend looking at a multi effects processor like these. They have MANY amp models and effects and the best thing is that you will never be bored again. it seems uncool not having an amps but man, they are soooo fun. really user friendly

Since I'm a new owner (this week) of an amp that sounds just great for home practice purposes, which was why I got it in the first place; practice and homestudio work.

Blackstar HT5. Comes as a combo or head http://www.blackstaramps.co.uk/products/ht-5/ht-5s.html

And it's easy to key in the sounds you like with the texture knob that goes from US to British flavored sound. At any gain. I'm surprised myself ohmy.gif With the texture knob on british and a small amount of gain on the OD channel it's AC/DC - fair and square! Gain at 2 o clock and scooped mids and you're in Metallica territory. Texture over to the brit side and keeping a fair amount of gain and adding more mids and there's Judas for you.

Clean to metal, vintage to modern. It will do what you ask it to.
I've only played a LP through mine so I don't know yet how single coils sound.
...which reminds me of your other problem, the string definition when you make chords. Your pickups certainly play a big role here. A super Dimarzio distortion comes off as undefined while an Dimarzio evolution har more clarity, especially if you can split it and use as single coil. Then you'll hear every string for sure.

I hope to be able to add a few Blackstar sound clips soon, but sorry, it won't happen this or the next week cause of having too much work.

I have a couple of recommendations:

http://www.zzounds.com/item--LINSPJAM - Line 6 Spider Jam
http://www.zzounds.com/item--VOXAD50VTXL - Vox AD50VTXL
http://www.zzounds.com/item--BLAB5112 - Blackheart BH5 112
http://www.zzounds.com/item--VOXAD30VT - Vox AD 30 XT

If you ask me I would go for the Blackheart BH5 amp, since it is all tube amp, but you will need some pedals with it.

I have the Blackheart BH5 112. I love it. I had a Peavey Triple XXX. It sounded good also but had way to much wattage for my small space. The BH5 112 has more than enough power and I can turn it up more to get the tubes nice and warm. But you do need effects pedals. I run a Digitech GNX4 in front of mine. My amp is the combo unit and I bought an extra 112 cabinet. So now I have a little mini half stack. Looks pretty cool smile.gif

By now people will think I'm undercover and really working for Vox, spamming commercial for them on the forums!
But yeah, check this youtube review of the Vox AD50VTXL

I only have good things to say about it, I think the absolutely best thing about it apart from the great sound and nice versatility would be the fact that you can change the wattage, always keeping the master cranked and not really losing any dynamics while still lowering the volume.

However, let's not forget that the Vox is NOT a real tube amp, which is the nice thing with the above mentioned Blackstar and Blackheart, they sound really good and even have a pretty nice price tag on them being a tube amp!
The only downside as previously mentioned, to be able to get the sound and effects you would want you'd have to get some pedals.

But I personally felt that for that price, I'd rather get something that has a bit of both, good sounds, lots of effects and versatility and even able to handle playing with friends in a rehearsal studio!

It's miss leading to say it has a tube power amp. It has a 12AX7 tube in the power amp section but it's not really powering the amp. It's another twist on the hybrid amps. Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking the amp as I've never even played through one. I just don't want people to think it's a tube amp when it quite a ways from it.

I would check out the peavey windsor. It is a true tube amp that can be had for around $400.00 new. Looks like a pretty cool amp.

All I have to say is 2 words...
Super Champ
Its possibly one of the most overlooked amps out there, but its also one of the best deals out there. It handles older metal very well, also, and with the right pedal in front of it, it can handle teh br00talz stuff too tongue.gif

The only helpful advice I can add is to always keep your eyes open for used gear for sale. You would be amazed at what you can find for sale, and for surprisingly low prices, too! Also, keep an open mind and don't be afraid to try something you hadn't thought about getting or have preconceived notions about.

super champ xd all the way, I own the vox modeller and it blows it out of the water, for the money there is no better amp than the Fender period...if you want to spend more money then the blackstar is supposed to be very nice, but you pay quite a bit more and it has quite a bit less power than the Fender, you won't be disappointed with the Fender

No, you could also use them as power tubes. I've built a small tube amp with both a light bulb and preamp tubes before. You can also use a lightbulb as a powersoak mod.

As some others have said, the Tiny Terror, Blackstar and the new Egnater Rebel are the ones to get. Stick a TS-9 in front of them and you've got all the gain you need, any more than that and you're compressing the signal too much.
