I find that if I sit down and jam I will mostly come up with things which reminds me of my previous compositions - however if I start by writing something "in my head" chances are much higher it will be something a little cooler. Oh and by the way - I never manage to actually play what I hear in my head, I just use that as an inspiration. What comes out is usually a mix between my idea and my physical limitations! Same with me - but the melodies you hear in your head can be springboard for new ideas anyway! I have found the same thing to be true Kristopher. If I just start jamming it sounds like my practice sessions or whatever licks I have been working on lately. For Emir's collaboration I started by just listening to the backing on my way into work. I would just "play" a solo in my head over and over. Then when I got home to my guitar I had at least the first lick already figured out and just found it on the guitar. That served as a springboard like you said to complete the rest of the solo. Kris gave a good example about making a melody from the head and then somehow transcribing it, and I agree, it's a great way to write something fresh and cool. When you feel you're stuck, try several different approaches and make a pause, go out on a fresh air perhaps, and start again. Creativity will come, don't worry! They used to take pen and paper and write out entire score and then play it on piano ! The point of this little story is that you need to train your inner ear, you need to try to play everything you hear in your head, even better - try to think about rhythm , harmony not just melody ! Soon enough (for everybody is different but if you do the work every day it will be sooner than latter), you will be able to compose using your ears only. Great practice tool is taking backing track and putting it on loop. Now hear a phrase in your head, sing it out loud and then try to translate it to your Guitar! Maybe you heard slide , or legato , or pinched harmonic on certain note in your head - go for it, transmit it to guitar. The whole point of this visualizing process is that you become much better and fluent in understanding your but also other styles in music. You will soon recognize rhythms , melodic patterns and cliches and harmony will open up special place in your inner ear thats for sure. So my suggestion is don't wait , go for it, and let me know of your progress - even one bar a day is great progress a day , just keep at it ! The problem with guitar is that you try to think in visual terms, which is silly because the music is auditive phenomenon. You cannot actually see the rhythm, it's invisible. Have you ever been apart from guitar for like, week or two weeks? And then, when you pick up the guitar after say, 10 days break, everything sound fresh and exciting, and you are full of ideas.
