Hello everyone,

Just want to say that i've come back to GMC after a year off and WOW!!!! The community has well evolved.

Here is my situation:

I currently own a ESP f-200 guitar but i'm kind of sick of it. I've bought that guitar about 6 years ago when I really like metal music and for me playing guitar only meaned plaiying all Metallica's songs. Ok I've change a lot since that period.

Now I'more in to Rock, Rock/Funk, Blues .... Well I'm into all style of music now and I need a guitar that is pretty versatile(is this a word in english? it means that can do anything). I also had a of problem with my ESP, the Floyd Rose system has given much more trouble to me than sweet tremolo. I'm thinking about buying a new guitar that allows me to play all kind of music.

I don't know why, but I have a craving for a Stratocaster for about 6 months. I always love this guitar and I think it would be a good one for me. I don't know if I should buy one used or new thought. I've found on the Internet that a guy who live in my city is selling a Stratocaster made in Japan for 600$. I don't really know if I should trust those guitar... have anyone ever experienced it?

I also found a guy who selled a really nice US Strat for 800$. I could also buy one new but they start at 999$ whitout the taxe(wich is 15% where I live). The advantage with this is that I could choose the color 3 tone sunburst whit the maple neck cool.gif. I really don't know what I should do.

I'm also open for other guitar brand, I really want a new guitar that can play any style of music and that doesn't break... Oh yeah, and I don't really play on amp anymore, I'm usually using my computer with the Line 6 Guitar Port (POD Farm).

Hope someone can help me with this situation.

Cheers !!!

I had that crave last year smile.gif Ended up costing me £1200!

I can tell you I had my doubts with buying a strat, and they were all proved wrong. I love mine with a passion now, it gets treated like a part of the family! biggrin.gif

I ended up buying a custom shop strat, second hand on ebay - which if you do your homework, know what you want and find someone local - is an excellent way of buying a second hand guitar in my view.

My first bit of advice is to find a recognised strat dealer near you, or at least a shop that stocks a number of strats, and go try out some different models.

You'll quickly decide what's right for you, and this is the only real way of doing so.

The choice is quite shocking and it really is down to personal preference!

From what I remember the order of quality goes from:

Mexican,
Japanese,
USA standard
USA custom shop.

I'm not sure on the first two, but I have played some great mexicans and 80's japanese that I prefer to the lower US standard range.

Then there's the Vintage Reissue vs Standard strat decision. The Vintage reissues can be made in any one of the countries listed above so the price varies depending on its palce of manufacture and parts quality. There's also the option of NOS of Relic. Unless you're desperate for some relic'ed old looking fenders, avoid these as you are literally paying for them to be aged. A relic 57 vs a New Old Stock (NOS) 57 fender will have the same specs, but have a price tag sometimes £1000 plus just because its been aged.

I would stick with the American strats. 600 for an jap strat is insanity. If you need to spend more money do it, save longer, it will only make it that much sweeter when you finally do get the axe.
Stratocasters are definitely awesome instruments, since it looks like you like a variety of music a S S H pick up configuration might suit your needs the best. This way you got two single coils and a hum bucker (for rock and stuff).

I own a G&L S-500, it came with a switch where I can combine the single coils to get a thicker sound... So check out G&L, they're a bit more expensive but they make real quality instruments.

Anyways, good luck.

Go for the american strat with the finish you want!, if you need to save a bit more then wait & save, but get the guitar you really want.

Last november I got that guitar with the same finish/neck, and I just love it. I can see why so many famous guitarists are devoted strat swingers, it's a perfect piece of craftmanship.

I would also very much recommend that you save some more and get a USA Strat. It's well worth the money, and the guitar is extremely nicely built (for the price).

I would recommend getting a USA Strat mate! Possibly new (to have the possibility to try the guitar and choose the finish you like)...They are well worth the price you pay for the guitar and its really versatile..

Me too I own a american standart strat, and that really surpassed all my expectations my friend, versatility, playability and love! But beware, not even same series two standart strats are the same. You should try it before you buy and like it.

Definitely American Strat, a Deluxe if you can find one for the right price. The neck on these things are smooth as silk. Every time I pick it up, I'm in love all over again.

Maybe a Les Paul? Or a Carvin? I haven't tried this two (never tried a gibson or any carvin) but I have heard good things about them they say that Les Paul is versatile and Carvin I don't know but they do look cool biggrin.gif

Thanks for your advises guys...

I'm going to visit thress music store this week and I'll try a couple of guitar... I was thinking today of my futur strat Today(actually 2 weeks), and I realiza that I had really litlle hands.. so I think I'm going to have to choose a Strat with a Thin neck...

I can't wait to have that guitar

Also, is there a big difference betweew a maple and a rosewood fingerboard? For the look I prefer the maple neck but I don't know for the sound and playability.

Maple neck sounds a bit brighter, rosewood is a bit more "round". But it's just a small difference, at least for my ears. I'd go for the one you like and feel better in your hands.

Quote from another site:
Maple:
Very bright and dense, Maple is highly reflective. When used on a fretboard, Maple encourages tremendous amounts of higher overtones and its tight, almost filtered away bass favors harmonics and variations in pick attack.

Rosewood:
The most common fretboard, Rosewood is naturally oily, and works well for any surface that sees frequent human contact. The sound is richer in fundamental than Maple because the stray overtones are absorbed into the oily pores

Personally I don't like the maple fretboard too much, it sounds brittle to me, and it misses some of the low end that I like. This is of course just my preference, it's highly subjective. I advise you to go into the store and try at least 5 different strat guitars so you can get a more clearer picture on what are the differences. Do some short AB tests between maple/rosewood and it will become clear to you what the difference is. It's not so hard to spot it.

Welcome back man!
It's great to see you here again.
I'm not a strat owner.... yet!
But I too would stick to US strats.
It is true that you can find some very good foreign ones, but I would make sure to try them before you buy...
Let us know what you end up getting!

Thanks for all your advices guys!!!

I have accumulate a bit more money so I think i'm going to buy an american one. I am going to try a used Fender strat on Friday. The guitar look beautiful and is equipped with a Seymour Duncan pickup in the bridge wich is perfect because my guitar is going to be a bite more versatile this way. This guitar is also affortable at a good price.

Do you know if there is a way to identify the type of Duncan this guitar have in the bridge?

Thanks a lot for your answers guys.

Cheers

I can't tell you what SD is there, it should say on the back of the pickup tho. But I support your decision about getting US Strat, they are awesome guitars.
