Hi everyone!

I was asked a while back to comment on this excellent collab and I had a lot of fun doing so! Here are the comments that I have for you. Keep in mind that all these are suggestions that I think will help you improve, but please by any means don’t read these as anything condescending.

You all did an excellent job and when I wrote the feedback and improvement suggestions, those are all things that I need to work on.

When it comes to music, I don’t think there is anyone better than you, or even worse than you for that matter. It’s just not relevant. We are all created with uniqueness in mind, and no one can do better than you what is inside of you. Always keep that in mind while reading this. Now here are the comments! Thanks again for asking me to comment on these.

enforcer
There are some very nice ideas in this one. I like the balanced mix of melodic lines with little technical bursts here and there such as you sweep for example. That helps your improvisation keep the listener interested.
There are a few things you could do to improve even more (just like all of us of course…). Some of your bends are slightly off, especially the ones at the end of the chord progression. I know this can be fixed easily because some of your bends are spot on and you are showing great control on them especially when you add some vibrato to them.
Other than that, you have a strong entry there and did a nice job. I’m looking forward to hearing more from your playing!

Torso
When I hear you lead, I feel that you have a lot of good things to say with your instrument which is an awesome thing. A few things can be done to help your musical ideas translate a little better on your instrument. Make sure your tuning is spot on. Use a tuner and your ears as sometimes one without the other won’t do a good job. Once your guitar is super tuned, I recommend that you take a backing track in a simple key, and play a series of same notes one after the other making sure that they sound super in tune with the backing (the amount of pressure you press the strings can sometimes affect the pitch of a note). Once you get simple notes mastered, do the same thing reaching that note with a bend from a half step below. Then do the same with a whole step below making sure that the desired pitch sounds as perfect as possible. This approach might seem fastidious (and it is!) but will really be beneficial. This exercise is actually valid for any player no matter their level. The guitar is not an easy instrument to tune and keep tuned and your fingers can always improve in that matter. Keep working on that aspect and you will do wonders!

Tjchep
Very nice bluesy licks man! You have really good control on your notes. I think you have a really cool vibe going there, I love your vibrato and bends. Great work! Every once and a while a few notes sound a little off tuning wise. Nothing that can’t be fixed easily though. Even though this was meant to be improvised work, I would love to hear what you come up with if you were to put the guitar aside, sing over the backing track until you have an idea you like and then reproduce that on your instrument. This will have the advantage of sounding very melodic, very personal and not limited to finger comfort on your instrument. You should try that, it really works and develops even more musical character. Great job!

Nermin
Some of the elements in your lead are great effective ideas. I’m thinking in particular about the slide you did at the beginning of the chord progression. I adds a nice touch and helps your lead get a second breath before starting the chord progression the second time. The main course of your lead sounds good, but felt a little unorganized the first time I heard it. Don’t get me wrong, the licks you played are tasty and well played, but the flow of your improvisation could be a little bit more focused. Here is an exercise I recommend you try. It’s inspired by something Paul Gilbert said in one of his lessons. Start with a simple lick, then try responding to it with a second lick that starts with the end of the lick you just finished. This exercise can be challenging, but has the advantage of helping your phrasing and developing a stronger sense of structure in your leads. Does that make sense? Keep doing so and you will have killer structured lines in no time!

Ivan
I like the energy you put in your faster licks. There’s some serious picking in there Ivan! You have a lot of very interesting things to say on your instrument, and you did! After listening to your take a few times, I regret that backing was too short. Or maybe you said too much in only two chord progression passes. As you probably know, the listener needs to be gently prepared to “get” what you are telling him. I think you told me too much with your instrument and that results in me not quite receiving your musical message like I should. It’s not your fault as a guitar player: it’s the listener’s ears that are just kind of lazy. An audience needs to be prepared with simple lines and repetition to gently bring him to your point. That’s always such a hard thing to do and I am super guilty of that. I hope this doesn’t sound too philosophical... Overall you did great Ivan as always. I wish the backing was longer so that you could have more time to spread out your ideas.

Paiva
There are some good ideas in there man, your lead is not too fast which is a good thing as it helps the listener stay focused and digest you notes. Now there are a few wrong notes that I heard in there. On the 7th measure, it sounds like you are playing an E Dorian scale. The Major 6th of the Dorian scale (C# in this case clashes with the C heard in the F chord (F-A-C). If you want to explore notes from a 7 note scale you should use an E minor scale here (E Aeolian). That way all your notes will fit the chords you are playing over. Fixing that will make your phrasing a lot better and help you sound even more melodic. Also, watch your bends as they are a little bit flat. You’re on the right track though, you have some good ideas that just need to be a bit cleaned up. Good work!

Chris Hurn
Wow, that vibrato sound in your intro is so unique! How did you do that? Whatever you did caught my attention in a good way. It almost has a Marty Friedman kind of feel. Your opening section is very simple yet very melodic leaving more place o lick orientated guitar work in the second section. That’s a good thing! A little cleaning up will help your playing reach higher grounds though. I recommend that you work on controlling your long notes a little more. Take a note and try to make it as long as possible using only your left hand vibrato. This can be done by using a wide up and down vibrating motion with your left hand. Don’t try doing that vibrating right to left in a fast motion as that will have a different effect and won’t help your notes to last long. A good application to that technique would be to play your opening theme using that vibrato technique. Keep up the good work!

crazyfret
I like what you did with your pentatonic scales. Using only five notes to share something with the listener is quite remarkable and you did a good job at it. Now there are a few spots that sound off, but that can be very easily fixed. First I thought that you were maybe using a wrong pentatonic scale, but after listening more closely I think your were just not controlling your notes enough. They sound a little out of tune at times. This can be fixed by being very critical of your playing and taking it one note at a time working on each one using the right amount of vibrato and pressure to achieve perfect pitch. If you spend time cleaning up your notes, you will achieve great musical things, I am sure! Also, on the very last chord of the backing track (D) you are playing a D minor pentatonic. Try using a D Major pentatonic instead of D minor pentatonic. If you are unsure of how to play Major pentatonic, just take the root of the Major chord you want to play over, and play a minor pentatonic a step and a half below that root (3 frets below). That comes to playing the relative minor to a Major scale. Keep working like you are, you are doping a great job!

Gibsonmatte
I like your variation on Hendrix’s original lead. It sounds very similar yet you added your own vibe to it. You have a good musical vocabulary and good control over your notes. Something to maybe try here if you wish to go further is to set you guitar aside, forget about Jimmi’s original take (hard to do because it’s so awesome!) and try to sing over the track something that really comes from your heart. It might take you a few passes, but after doing so for a little while you will start hearing some cool ideas that you probably haven’t played before. That’s when your job as a guitar player starts. Take your guitar and reproduce what you sang. You will probably find different fingerings than the ones you are used to. This will develop your own melodic style even more. Keep up the excellent work!

Thank you David! Nice to hear your comments! Hiya David,

Firstly thanks for you comments and suggestions on areas to improve my lead playing smile.gif . Yes you did catch me out with me playing the D minor pentatonic rather than the D major pentatonic tongue.gif

I know I'm not a gr8 lead player but its an area I want to improve in. Yes clarity is a problem as I seem to be a little rushed in my playing and not fretting the notes properly. Is there any lessons on GMC you would suggest perhaps to start on? I was looking to Ivan's Pentatonic Series to expand my kretboard knowledge.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment smile.gif

Spot on David!
I know that I really have some problems with coming up with more things to play when trying to do some solos and I often get stuck in the same patterns. So I will absolutely try to "find" other melodies by singing to the tracks and then translate/transpose this to the guitar. Excellent and thanks again David!

well guys, my congrats to everyone who has played in this collab! all takes are awesome, and all of you have done a great job here. I was asked a while ago to comment about the takes so I want to say thanks to john for let me participate in this collab as a reviewer. I never did something similar so I hope to do a good job. laugh.gif

1) enforcer
well, you was very creative on this take. You mix a little bit of everything. Good notes election, nice sounding, sweet licks, speed and nice atmospheres.
It´s well done, well performanced, and balanced. One of the best in this collab from my point of view. wink.gif
Your take shows confidence and passion.
I´ll put extra attention in some parts of your take. bads and goods things.
So, here I go tongue.gif

00.26: this lick works perfectly here! You play it correctly, and you find a way to capture my attention.
00.32: be careful with bends.
00.38: exellent note. Great vibrato.
00.45: I think this lick´s a little bit out of time.
01.06: once again you have some problem with bendings here.
01.08: lovely ending wink.gif

The ideas you put in there are awesome! So I have to tell you, your take show me you are working really really good! You find the way to do a solo with personality and that´s so important for me. Mistakes... all we have them, to get cool ideas it´s a little bit more difficult! And you did it! wink.gif
So thanks a lot for give us this awesome take enforcer!!!

2)Torso
ok, torso´s time tongue.gif
after hear your take for many times, I found it very attractive.
I learned myself your take by ear, to see what you did exactly. And I saw that you put exellent ideas in there. So, I´ll tell you...

01.18: the note you use to start is a little bit out of tune. May be, was the vibrato you used there or the whole tune of your guitar. I don´t know.
01.23: nice lick! Great use of silences in there.
01.32: from here on, thing are much better, you must be careful with bends, sometimes, they don´t reach the note.
01.49: the lick is nice, but it´s a little bit out of time.
02.03: this would be another great moment of the solo. Once again take care of your bends.

Well, I think your head is a little more advanced than your current skills. Your ideas are great man, but your hands can´t do it yet. so, pay more attention on your weakness of your own solo, and you´ll improv a lot with them. For example, if you improve your bends and your tuning, you´ll improve your take %70! That´s an important improv, just for only paying attention on bends and tunings.

Thanks a lot Torso!

3)Tjchep
Hi Tjchep! Man, congrats for this solo! Really like it.
You have confidence and that´s a really good thing! I mean, your extreme bends show me that you have power to play guitar. Nice sounding, it´s not perfectly recorded but this isn´t important here wink.gif
Your take is interesting, passionate and creative. Full of bends and vibratos taken from hell! tongue.gif
So, here I go...

02.30: you started a little shy, that was great because noone would expect that. So, from my point of view, you was smart in this case wink.gif
02.42: exellent lick!
02.50: the first time I heard this bend I said: Yeah!!! Great!
02.54: here something weird is happenning, the notes you played are a little bit out of time.
03.00: from here on, things are awesome, this combination of bends are really great man!
03.26: this fast lick is a little bit out of time.
03.32: here you played a 6th, it sounds good for me, but I dont know if you did it consciously or not.

Well, this take is great, another one at the top of this collab! Just an advise, it doesn´t mean that there´s something wrong with your take ok.wink.gif
For the next time, you could add more advanced licks combinated with those awesome bends, I think results could be even better. wink.gif

Thanks a lot and congrats once again Tjchep!!!

4)Nermin
well Nermin, this was a nice take. I like the ideas you put in there, the notes, some bends and vibratos are well done too. This solo is well balanced too. You was a little shy along the whole Bt, so because of that, in some parts your take sounds a little bit weak. I like your composition, it has interesting ideas, and it´s not boring at all, and that´s a good thing.
So...

03.38: well, I can hear a weird sound before you start to play. If you always have this problem, ask in the forum some tips to fix it up.
03.45: this lick is sweet, well done!
04:07: nice vibrato. This kind of things, show me that you are very creative.
04.16: nice bend, be careful with tuning.
04.23: lick out of time. Pay attention on that.
04.32: from here on, you miss the time. The legato idea is really nice, but it´s a little bit messed up.

Well, I think you are working correctly, and this take show me that you have great ideas in your mind. So, keep on practicing to improv your skills.

Well done! And thanks Nermin!

5)Ivan
well Ivan, your take is awesome man! It looks like you love this kind of music. Every lick is played with passion and with a great technique. The mixture between fast parts and passionate bends and vibratos is well balanced.
You show us so clearly your musical knowlegde through your take. So, I think many members of this collab could learn a lot from this!

Congrats and thanks for share your talents here Ivan!

6)Paiva
hi Paiva! This was an exellent take. It´s well done, with good taste on notes, without great mistakes in there and correctly played.
It´s a little bit low, I don´t know why. But it´s not too important in this case. You show me that you are a great composer. So, in details...

06.05: nice lick to start!
06.25: I think this lick is out of scale.
06.36: this minor 3rd works perfectly. Well done.
06.46: bend out of tune.
06.56: this legato lick is out of time. Pay attention on that.

So, overall I like it. I think you will improv this weak points so easily, because you show confidence in every note, and that´s too important to learn something new every day.
Keep up the great work!

Thanks a lot Paiva!

7)Chris Hurn
well man!!! First to all, awesome sound you get here! This vibrato sounding caught me from the beginning wink.gif
A wise take you gave me to hear. Patient and quiet, like a man telling us a sad love story. So...

07.17: anybody said western movies...? wink.gif
07.31: nice melody.
07.37: exellent lick man. I like it so much.
07.44: this lick is a little bit out of time.
07.50: another great lick!
08.14: from here on, you reached the climax of your take. It´s an exellent lick. Congrats.

You did a great work here man. I think this is another one of the best takes in this collab from my point of view. You don´t show any advanced things but it´s replaced for your good taste and creative way to compose this solo.

Congrats Chris and thanks for this take!

8)crazyfret
Hi crazyfret and thanks for your take.
First impression: I liked it.
Nice sounding, some exellent licks, confidence and good ideas here and there.
I heard some mistakes in timing, bends out of tune but nothing really bad, so let me tell you...

08.28: I really like the way you start your take! Well done!
08.35: nice lick and well played!
08.40: lick out of time.
08.49: this bluesy lick works perfectly here!
08.53: notes out of tune.
09.01: this is a difficult note to play. You can add more vibrato to put the note in tune. I think this note election was great. Just you have to play it better.
09.30: lovely ending.

Well, as I said, I liked your take. Mainly, you have personality and that´s what I look for when I hear a guitarrist. Your taste is good, you feel music, so that´s all you need to growing up as a musician. Weak points must be improved by practice easily.
Congrats for this take!

Thanks crazyfret wink.gif

9)Gibsonmatte
finally, Gibsonmatte.
Great and powerful take. You get a rocking sounding and you was the only one who add some wah wah in his take! Extra points for that wink.gif
Well, to be honest, I was thinking: after 8 takes I will hear something similar to the others participants, but you show me that I was wrong tongue.gif
You showed great licks, some advanced things that, personally, I liked them so much, confidence and good taste. Well...

09.45: exellent lick man! wink.gif
09.53: personally, I think this was one of the most interesting licks in the whole collab. Well done!
10.01: this part is a little bit out of time.
10.05: here you stop in the same note for 8 times, I think it´s not bad, but you can do it better.
10.17: fast parts are a little bit messed up.
10.32: exellent wah wah part. It´s works perfectly in there!

Well, I think the only ones things you have to improv here are those advanced fast parts you´ve played at 10:17. I mean, you can play them, only have to clean some of them to get more clarity.
Overall, this take is well done! Also this was one of my favs takes of this collab, so I hope hear more from you soon!

Thanks a lot Gibsonmatte!

Thanks to everyone participating in this and a special thanks to the reviewers..

1) Enforcer - nice tone you have for this and some very nice ideas you have.. the faster runs you put in were not overdone, and your bends sounded good to me... I really like the double stops, thats one thing i gotta add to my playing more... I really enjoyed your take, thanks for participating

2) Torso - I see you have the double stops in your take also, looks like im the only one not using them.. Seemed off in a couple of spots, but you did a nice job of staying in the scale.. The guitar was a little loud for my taste, maybe lower the volume when mixing it in. Overall you have some nice ideas, just need to put them together and make them a little smoother... thanks for participating

3)Tj - Excellent phrasing and playing with feeling.. you said it was a little sloppy, but i think it fit in there perfect.. Your bends sounded very smooth and played with feeling and your tone was perfect.. I really liked this take, great job
thanks for participating

4) Nermin - there is some sound before the backing starts, maybe needed to cut that out during your mixing... Seemed like you did alot of bending that went no where.. I like the legato you did at the end, and you seemed to stay in time for the most part... I think you needed to add some phrasing in your playing and mix it up with the fast runs and bends.. Your tone sounded nice for this.. thanks for participating

5) Ivan - Ivan was kind enough to make this on youtube for everyone to see what he did... Awesome take, with nice blend of speed runs, bends and phrasing... another one with the double stops, man i need to add them to my own ideas
thanks for participating

6) Pavia - your guitar was too low, need to improve on that in your mixing.. You seem to stay in rhythm with the backing nicely... and you seem to play with feeling, your legato sounded good til the end you hit a wrong note that kinda threw everything out of whack.. but you seem to play with confidnece, all in all a good take
thanks for participating

7) Chris Hurn - Well personally i wasnt feeling the vibrato thing you had at the beginning, but it was different... after that beginning you started to shine... you changed my mind and seemed to play with feeling, nice bends at the right time... you played some nice licks in there and played them with confidence... good take
thanks for participating

8) Crazyfret - I can tell you have listened to this song quite a few times.. very nice hendrix licks you put in here, and excellent phasing in your playing, you have a nice mixture and dont try to jam too many notes in there.. nice way to play with feeling.. good take
thanks for participating

9) Gibsonmatte - personally my favorite take in this collab, you played with confidnece and feeling... and added alot of your own stuff in with some classic hnedrix licks... and im a wah lover, so i really enjoyed hearing someone using the wah in here... very very nice mixture of speed runs, bends, phrasing... excellent take, cant find anything wrong with it
thanks for participating

im a student here at GMC, so my review might not be as advanced as the instructors, Im just writing on my own opinion and feelings on these takes... these are just opinions

I want to thank everyone involved in this collab and i really enjoyed listening to everyones takes

thanks,
John

how can i overlook something that isnt there? Ill add it in

Sorry i didnt get a chance to add it in... For some reason i cant find the little wing file on my computer, i probably deleted it to save some memory on my slow computer.. Ill go ahead and comment on your intro...
Sounded nice, you have all the notes down, just seemed like it was a little slower than it should be... maybe it was on time, but it just seemed to be off time to me.... thanks for adding it though

Just curious, why did you delete it before the collab was over?

Thank you Lian and John, your comments are very to the point style I loved that.

And Lian, yes, you are right about bends, but it has been 2 months since I recorded this, I am working on these bends like hell, hope I do better on the next collab!

Great initiative, great collab man! Thank you! laugh.gif
