So I just sold my Randall 50watt tube combo for obvious reasons:
-sounded cheap (as it's a cheap tube amp)
-to modern sounding for rock and not heavy enough for Metal (just meh -.-)

...and now I'm going to need another amp but luckily, i have more money to spend this time! (about 2200Euro)

I am going to either buy:

-An amp that can be used for gigs/rehersals and bedroom use
-A halfstack for gigs rehearsals and a small amp for bedroom use
-Buy a freakin halfstack and play it in my bedroom^^

I want metal&hardrock tones from the amp so I thought: Marshall JVM, ENGL Powerball or Peavey 6505 and for the bedroom, I want versitality but I hate modeling so I need suggestions and input for my nex t buy!!!

I will only suggest on the bedroom amp, the others I think you got foll control of yourself wink.gif

I was rescently browsing for a practice amp myself and ended up with a Blackstar HT5. Check it out, it can do anything!! I was surprised myself, usually the 5watters will do blues and if cranked a good crunch but this goes from clean to metal (two channels)

How expensive are Mesa's Rectifiers there in Germany? you could get one used for maybe about 1500e and then you would still have money for a cabinet. That's just one suggestion though.

I've heard good tones from the JVM, and it was used for example in Opeth's Watershed for the rhythm guitars, so it can get you nice tones also. The 6505 is also a safe bet smile.gif

Even more mighty expensive that in the US. I'd personally go with an ENGL Savage. It's my dream amp. It has great classic metal tones as well as a really brutal death metal sound. But you can't play it at bedroom levels. Well you can but it sounds castrated that way. Which is the reason I don't have one yet. For practice at home I use an ENGL E530 preamp a GT-10. That way I can have that nice tube sound all night long without getting lynched by my neighbors or parents.

The Blackstar sounds like a good idea but I am always a bit sceptical when it comes to low watt amps and versitality...
I am going to try one on monday!!!

Rectifiers are not an option, unfortunatley because they are ridicioulusly expensive arround here...

I have never tried an ENGL savage but I sure will now, thanx 29a!

The problem with engl amps for me is their modern and somewhat sterile tone (Fireball and Powerball), maybe it's the ENGL cabs i played them through...gonna try them through marshall vintage cabs on monday

The problem with the JVM is (although it's the heaviest sounding Marshall) that it's not tight and heavy enough for some extreme metal genres - on the other hand the Peavey 6505 is extremely tight but not very versitaile neither on crunch nor on clean -.-

Any more input on a bedroom solution? I don't know nothing about Tube preamps and how to play through them at home...

Cool to see you talking about ENGL... I have very good references about these amps but I couldn't try any one because nobody imports those amps here in Argentina. Lian told me that many extreme bands like Dimmu Borgir use ENGL.

I think that to play at home you could get a peavey or a marshall combo. Personally (for practicing and recording demos) I use Pod X3 live conected to my monitors in my studio and in my bedroom I have a Marshall mod 8080.

Peavey Windsor Studio, has the power sponge, and can power a 4x12 cab (modestly) if you need it. $400.

I had a similar experience with the fireball. But I guess that's what some people are looking for, hard, tight in your face sound with a shitload of distortion. For me the savage was more organic and alive than the fireball. There is a swich to change the distortion from smooth to rough so be sure to try that one.

Ok. A Preamp contains the first gain stages of and amp. When you turn up the gain knob, that's the preamp. Now the problem is that the output of the preamp is not strong enough to be fed into a speaker. So you'll normally hook it up to a power amp (that's where the master volume sits) and then into a cab. Now the preamp I use has a little solid state poweramp and cab simulation in there. So you could hook it up to a little speaker or headphones. Sound good for clean sounds. Horrible when distorted. Now what I do is I use the ENGL as preamp together with my GT-10. Which sound's great. As I already said I use headphones most of the time and I think it's the best solution for that (If anybody knows something better for playing with headphones tell me!). Now when I jam with a friend or my girlfriend is arround I plug the output of the GT-10 into my roland micro cube. Which sounds pretty good (better than the microcube alone) considering it's only using a 5" speaker with a 2 Watt solid state poweramp.

audiopaal,
What cab did you use?

Probably some ENGL amp is the best choice of all those things. Marshall is too soft, Peavey is too hard, and ENGL is in the middle, but get a decent cab for it. Possibly get an ENGL combo, and extension cab for it, it's a flexible option for gigs and rehearsals.

One word Marshall. Get the Marshall contour your sound with a 6 band eq and your in heaven. It's really not that hard. Engl are great amps but really, seriously if your not rocking with a Marshall your just a wanna be. biggrin.gif

For your bedroom I like the half stack idea. Sounds rock and roll to me!!!

I think I've settled for the Halfstack in Bedroom solution^^

I won't be satisfied with a small bedroom amp once I've heard a good tube amp...
The amps I mentioned are pretty modern and have great master volume knobs so they sound really good on low volumes and if that's not enough there is still the possibility of an attentuator!

I'll just have to wait for my paycheck to come in and then I'm off to buy my new amp after a really long tryout in my local store. I'll keep you guys updated on which one I settled!!

What half stack are you considering getting? I play a JCM900 thru a 1960a slant cab at band practice- it's not even remotely close to a bed room level playing amp..

JCM 900 is the reason. I play a JCM 2000 DSL 50 with two 1960 cabs, both A and B. I use a Omnisonic volume box in my effects loop and I'm able to get great tone at very low volumes.

ZakkWylde was talking about the JVM. This newer series really does low volumes pretty well. I'm sure with a omnisonic volume box is would be great.

I used to play a JCM 800 2205 head. This had a master volume but was very touchy at low volumes. I wish the Omnisonic device was avaliable back in the late 80's. If your JCM 900 has a effects loop you should give one a try. They're inexpensive but make playing at low volumes so much more enjoyable.

If you can find them in your country, the Traynor YCS 50 or 90 comes in head and combo, can be set at class A 15 watts or full wattage...probably one of the most versatile amps out there, has way too many options to list I would recommend going to their site. You may also want to try the new Bogner Alchemist, it's a pretty sweet amp as well, great for metal and rock, plus a very sweet clean, think somewhere between a fender blackface and a mesa lonestar
