Hey guys,

So I got into an argument on youtube with this dude who claims that there are only three real guitar chords. I don't know what he bases it on and he doesn't really care to explain either. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSz6br6lUOA

Do you guys get it? Is he right or is he just frustrated and likes to project this on other people? huh.gif

There is more than 3 chords and he is wrong smile.gif

Major , minor, augmented, diminished, sus2, sus4 and other untraditional type of triads (voicing in forths, clusters etc).

So thats just triads, once you do 4 part chords it extends drastically.

Major6, Major7, Major7b5, Major7#5, Minor6, Minorb6, Minor7, MinorMaj7, Minor7b5, Dominant7, Dominat7b5, Dominant7#5, Diminished7, DiminishedMaj7 ...

Then you add tensions and you get even more possibilities.
I don't even want to go into Triad over Bass note concept (slash chords) or Poly chords where you stack one chord in the bottom and one on top!

So yes answer is there is more than 3 chords laugh.gif

As far as 5 shapes go, you can observe every chord voicing like it came from some sort of CAGED shape. I see nothing wrong with that.

Hope that helps.

Hahaha poor fellow, he's clueless. Even if he's talking about only the "shapes" there are more than three for sure. Tell him that he might want to check the Scott Henderson's chord chart hahaha tongue.gif

A discussion on youtube must be so useless dry.gif Youtube is so full of experts who tells people this and that and knows everything but don't have any videos of their own playing to back it up.

The poor fellow was probably referring to the shapes (like major and minor) that can be moved around the fretboard using barre (+open chords) or in basic swept arpeggios. He probably got stuck at the first few pages of the book he was referring to. laugh.gif
