Outlaw.

Lets start at the bottom. And see where you start to get off track.

1. do you know the 12 note names? (list them if so)
2. do you know how to create the major scale if given the root note name? (for example, create G major)
3. do you know how to create the minor scale if given the root note name? for example, create D minor)
4. do you know the names of the 7 modes? And how they are related to each other? (Monte's chart)

I can get you up to speed (to where what we are talking about as a group) if you and Monte think thats a good idea.

We know Monte can handle it of course, just offering if either of you think thats helpful.

We can do it in your thread or off to the side elsewhere. (assuming you want to learn this stuff of course)

Alright,
Everybody shut up and Eyes to the front.....

KAZ!!!! TURN THAT DAMN BOX OFF AND PAY ATTENTION!!!! laugh.gif laugh.gif

So...Back to pentatonics.

Here is what I was wanting you guys to see.

ALL THE NOTES FOUND IN THE 3 MAJOR AND 3 MINOR PENTATONIC SCALES I HAD YOU SPELL OUT, ARE ALSO FOUND IN THE "A IONIAN" SCALE.

SO WE NOW HAVE 7 SCALE OPTIONS FOR SOLOING.....KIND OF.. laugh.gif laugh.gif

BEACAUSE...AND JER CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG....

E MAJOR PENTATONIC=C#MINOR PENTATONIC
D MAJOR PENTATONIC=B MINOR PENTATONIC
A MAJOR PENTATONIC=F# MINOR PENTATONIC

So going back to our triads. If I am soloing Over a D major Chord in the Key of D Lydian..Like we are this month.
I can play licks using the D Lydian scale AND I an also use the D Major Pentatonic=B minor Pentatonic. Pretty cool Eh!!

So now for any diatonic chord progression we have basically four scale options available to us to use. In the case of
"A Major" we have:

A MAJOR
E MAJOR PENTATONIC=C#MINOR PENTATONIC
D MAJOR PENTATONIC=B MINOR PENTATONIC
A MAJOR PENTATONIC=F# MINOR PENTATONIC

Did I lose anybody?

I came to this thread a bit late. But I have read it. smile.gif

Question. If we are using a progression in A major

I understand why we can use these:

Amaj
Amaj pentatonic
F#min pentatonic (relative minor)

Where did these come from though?

C#MINOR PENTATONIC
D MAJOR PENTATONIC
B MINOR PENTATONIC

I understand that Bmin is relative to Dmajor... What is the relation of Dmaj and C#min to Amajor though?

And if we can use F#min pentatonic, cant we use F#min too?

I understand they have the same notes. So that means they will work. Is there any relation though? (like the relative minor thing) or is it just happenstance?

All relative minors of each other AND the roots of all of those scales are found in "A Major".

nothing like always the IV and V or anything like that? (I think that may be true looking at the chart. pentatonic maj versions of the IV and V)

Why not F#min (F#Aeolian)?

Same notes as A Ionian. I don't include it because it is the same box shapes in the same positions as A IONIAN. The pentatonics use the same shapes but they are in different positions so it give you alot of options, but your thinking was correct.

Cool, It seems thats true across the board.

If you are playing in any major key, (Ionian) you can use pentatonics based on the IV and V note of the key you are in.

Amaj = D & E maj pentatonics
Bbmaj = Eb & F maj pentatonics
Cmaj = F & G maj pentatonics
Dbmaj = Gb & Ab maj pentatonics

etc......

Just one more use of the cool chart!!!

It's all about options!! Now if you have a cool lick that you like to run in the first pentatonic box but you don't like where it is situated on the neck for the key you are in, You got two other options!!!
