lol... I played many a club with a Peavey Bandit in a half arsed punk band... and we got laid and paid - the only things that matter. My equipment is better now, but I haven't seen an equal increase in the quality of the women... so I say go with the best affordable option. If you're good it doesn't matter.... the only people that compliment equipment are dudes anyway. If someone says "Nice rig" I want them to be female and talking about my junk...

....probably should have waited until I wasn't hammered to make my first forum post...

The relation between Wattage and Volume is not linear but logarithmic. So 100 Watt is not 100 times louder than 1 Watt but actually only twice as loud. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_amplifier#Power_output for reference. wink.gif

Actually, 100W is 4x louder than 1W, but yeah you have the right idea. 100W would be 2x louder than 10W tongue.gif

I read through this whole thread and one thing that I dont think was covered enough is using this amp to practice.

Yes, we know that you can mic up anything live and the monitors and PA will take care of it. Even guys like Paul Gilbert use a marshall 2x12 or even a 1x12 and thats their live rig. I think James Hetfield and Kirk Hammet use single 12"s in ISO cabs in the truck. You dont even see their actual amps.

But at band practice.... Playing "South Of Heaven" and "Holy Wars" do you really think a 2x12 is going to be heard by the drummer AND the rest of the band?

It sure wouldnt with my band. I've never played with a live drummer in a non-mic'd setting and been able to use anything smaller than a 4x12. NEVER. Maybe I only play with slamming drummers. I don't know...

Most garage bands are what 80% practice, 20% gig?

Whatever you get has to hold up at practice too. If its good there, it'll be fine live.

Tube vs Solid State? Whatever sounds good man. Would you be happy with the tone that many instructors here get?

Muris uses a Pandora doesnt he????

Have you tried it? With a proper head? I haven't but I know a 2x12 can be really loud. Probably loud enough to make you mega deaf biggrin.gif

I agree that in non miced settings it is best to use 4x12 cab and at least 100W tube amp, but those occassions are pretty rare in my experience. In studio the room is often small and you can use 1x12, or 2x12 cabs no problem. Also, I've used 1x12 50W hybrid combos in non miced club settings, and it can be done, but the sound will be not that great. But it can be done no problem, specially if you have 100W 2x12 amp that you can put higher.

So this weekend I finally got the chance to play both the Marshall and Crate stacks, only bad thing there were Peavys working in guitar center nor best buy dry.gif

The marshall was OK, definitely not worth the $600, it sounded good with a BOSS metal zone running through it though

The Crate was actually very good, it went very loud and its distortion was really good, I will probably end up buying this one since its very cheap and sounds great

thanks everyone for all the help smile.gif
