I agree that in non miced settings it is best to use 4x12 cab and at least 100W tube amp, but those occassions are pretty rare in my experience. In studio the room is often small and you can use 1x12, or 2x12 cabs no problem. Also, I've used 1x12 50W hybrid combos in non miced club settings, and it can be done, but the sound will be not that great. But it can be done no problem, specially if you have 100W 2x12 amp that you can put higher.
