tell us how you recorded these.

The clean one sounds great I think. Just peaks a couple of times.

crunch one sounds pretty good too I thought.

Switchblade->SM57->preamp->soundcard

I have the option to raise or lower "input gain" and "input drive" on the preamp. Which one should I use to set the miclevel?

Yes, I do. When playing the amp, it sounds much more open and wide. recorded it gets very compressed and kinda muddy, even though I reduced the gain quite alot. Maybe I should try with the mic seated a bit away from the cloth of the amp? Now it is about 2 cm from the center of the cone.

I'm happy with the clean though, apart from the peaks.

seems SM57's are usually right on the cone though.

Rememebr you arent hearing anything but that though.

No "room" like when you play live.

If you had a 2nd mic back in the room to pick that up it would be more open.

Or if you did some post processing. (reverb, etc...)

What you have now is what you'd hear with your ear right on the speaker. Not back in the room like you really are.

So, would you recommend that mic to be a sm57 as well, or should I go for something else?

I dont have much experience in this area. I've only ever used a 57 but all my cab micing has been high gain metal. Dont need much "room sound" there.

The further back you get it from the cone the more room you get in the recording.

Normally Dynamic mics like that are used pretty close though.

Condenser mics can be used further away. I've read of people mixing the signals from both once recorded...

Sounds familiar to me wink.gif

Just a tad too much mic preamp gain, as mentioned

Sounds pretty good man, nice sounds! As everybody said, try to lower down the volume so there is not clipping. You can monitor the clipping on the LED meter on the preamp, and also monitor it in the recording application. It shouldn't even go past 0dB.
