Hey guys,
I have a camcorder wich i use for video recording, now i record with it not-connected to pc, and when im done i put its SD-card into the pc and get my videos from it onto my pc.
This works ok but the big problem is:
The video is recorded in .mov format, it looks great when i look at it in quicktime, 1280x720 resolution, very sharp image, very bright.
But as soon as i convert it to any other kind of file (or upload to youtube for example) it gets terribly dark sad.gif

It can also connect to pc just like a webcam, so i thought maybe it would be alot better if i use a program that can use webcam to record video with.
I saw someone mentioning recording in windows movie maker in another topic, but i can't find any option like that in mine (i have Vista so maybe they took out the feature?)

Does anyone know another (free)program i could use to record video like this?

Youtube converts every file in its own format and that's why you lose quality. It's always like that with Youtube. If you are exporting it in your computer then you need to find some other codec and see what works the best. Mp4 is a good one. If you want to capture video directly into the computer then use option "capture" from the file menu. It's called "capture" in almost every video editing software. Your camera needs to be connected and recognised by the program before the program let you use that option. After that you can apply some effects like brightnes/contrast, sharpen, color balance etc... and render the video in a different format.

There's a Virtual Dub which is a free software, you can download and try it out mate. It is a linear video editing tool, which means you have one video track and then you put the videos on the timeline on that track, no layers/multitrack. If you want a cheap non linear video editing software that works good, check out Vegas Movie Studio, it's around 50$ and well worth the money.

BTW, what model of camcoder do you have? Does it have Firewire connection?

Thanks for the help smile.gif
Ill try Virtual Dub first then.

It doesnt have firewire, just usb.
its a cheap 90€ Aiptek (AHD C100)

And other peoples youtube videos have much better lightning, my video is good enough before uploading it,
i'm not sure where it goes wrong..
I use a bright ceiling light and 2 lights on my desk pointed at me but still it looks like this (only after converting/uploading):

The guitar is lighted ok most of the time, so its not that big of a problem but i actually have a very light background that just totally disapears into darkness.

Tell me mate, can you stream your video directly into the PC via USB, or USB connection serves only as a link to access the memory card data, so you can copy it on PC.

I'm asking cause if you can stream the video from camera directly to PC, it would possibly have much better quality. Try with virtual dub, it has a screen capture function, and let us know what you did please.

cheers
Ivan

When i connect it with usb i can choose to connect to its disk to download videos to pc, or i can choose to make it stream directly to pc smile.gif

I tryed virtual dub now, it has alot of options so im still checking it out.
sofar it seems to be working though!

I made a very quick test vid and am now uploading to youtube to see if it keeps its brightness.
I think i need to change some settings though cause this one is 450mb for 22 seconds video tongue.gif
Will try out the program more tomorrow and give an update smile.gif

When you are streaming the file is usually stored as DV AVI file which is uncompressed video format. It has .avi file extension. You should edit the video in Virtual Dub, and use some kind of codec to compress and render the video to a more smaller file size. Smaller file - less quality.
The most common used codecs are dvix, xvid, flash video, H.264 (MPEG4 AVC, best to use). You can choose any of these formats to compress the image, and it is best to tweak the options a bit until you find a suitable size/quality ratio.
In general every video you put on YT will be compressed even more, so be carefull about the settings you put there - there's an page on YT with instructions on what are the best settings for video resolution and quality, so you can use those settings to make a file in Virtual Dub.

Can Vegas Movie Studio capture video stream directly from cam aswell?
The program looks nice so if it can do that i'd sure buy it, its nice to have all in one program.
I can't really find out on the site if it can capture directly, and i downloaded the free-trial but it seems like i installed it before and didn't try, so the 15day timer ran out.

It definitely can, and then some. Very smooth workflow is something that makes Vegas great choice for video editing.

Vegas should enable you to capture directly and with good quality..Also it enables you to render files in various formats so it will definitly keep the image looking as when it was recorded.
