Hi there

I played probley my dream amp a few days ago a marshall vintage modern. it did everything i wanted classic rock and blues tone.

I was going to buy one recently but couldnt decide if i should be buying a half stack or a combo. I play small to medium size gigs. The combo has the same speakers that i would use if i bought a stack (G12 speakers).

I am not sure what to go for , as both seemed to have the same tone in the store but of course i didnt get a chance to use them on a gig.

What is everyones opinions on a combo vs a stack? which would i be best going for.

Help is much appreciated
Many Thanks

I used to have the Marshall Vintage Modern Halfstack (50W head and 4x12 cab)..
Awesome amp in every way, great sounding smile.gif

The Combo will be just fine in a live setting, if I decide to get it again (it has crossed my mind) I'd go for the combo.
Smaller and easier to travel with, as well as it has the same great sound.
And if you need to fatten it up a bit you can always buy an extra cab for it smile.gif

But no matter what you choose, it's a great amp and I know you'll be happy smile.gif

Just think about what you need and go from there smile.gif

Are you practicing with a band that has a loud drummer and no PA at practice?

The extra output of a 4x12 may be useful there.

If you can mic the cab whenever you need then the combo would do ya just fine.

I'm a head and cabinet kind of guy myself, I like the opportunity to be able to have different cabinets and find my own match.

But for a combo where they added the speakers that would truly match and it's the ones you want, why not, then there's no need for change those.

Heads are a little more easy to service, concidering the work you do yourself like changing tubes. Not by much but the tube are standing up and it's easier than to work upseidedown.
A head and cabinet can weigh more in total but each unit is easier to carry around, you have to walk twice (yes you can put let the head ride on a cabinet with wheels to make it even more easy but sometimes I dislike the idea of a bumpy transport of the head in terms of caring for your tubes)

The VM does seem like a cool amp! Not so much modern-modern but the rock sounds are totally right

I like the tone from Haed+cabs more than Combos, especially Marshall combos! Marshall amps are great (JVM player here) but they always mess up the combos (NO low end, scratchy tone, etc) but the same combo played through a cab sounds at least 10 times better so it's the combo built that's faulty...

Save the money you would have to pay for a built in speaker you don't need and go for a 2x12 cab (which sounds great, is enough for any gig and isn't too hard to transport) or go all out for a 4x12 if you need a bigger sound!

I would say 2x12 combo, 4x12 cab needs two people to carry it around, and it's bigger than a 2x12 combo. 2x12 combo also requires 2 people for carrying long distances, but it's more compact, fits better in car/van, and one person can handle it on short distances. And YES 4x12 has a better sound!

I really like the fact that tubes in heads are placed upwards, which is definitely better then putting them to hang down like in combos. However with careful handling this all shouldn't be too much of a problem, and replacing the tubes is piece of cake with both versions if you need to do it. Combo version requires unscrewing 4 screws more and taking out the amp from the cab which is not something that is difficult to do, and it is not done often neither.

I love the sound of Vintage Modern, I was on the verge of getting one, but the shops didn't have it sad.gif I hope you have fun with it! smile.gif

I've actually tried the combo as well, sounds great (no faulty build, no scratchy tone etc.) smile.gif
Paul Gilbert used it for his last tour also I believe (the combo that is) smile.gif

"Regarding amps, Gilbert used ADA preamps and rack effects units early in his career prior to switching to Laney amplifiers. He praised the Laney amps as having "the best natural distortion of any tube amp ever heard". Since the G3 2007 tour however, Gilbert stated that playing with Joe Satriani and John Petrucci inspired him to take a closer look at his own guitar sound. As a result of his search he found the Marshall Vintage Modern series. He currently uses the Marshall Vintage Modern 2266c combo amps."

I didn't say faulty built I said lacking low end, ALTHOUGH I can't recall playing a vintage modern combo, just the head...

My Marshall combo statement goes for Jvm, Tsl, dsl and Avt combos though! (imo)

---

Just to keep that old discussion going: I can carry my 4x12 cab arround on my own!

I know, I just had to offer my opinion on the combo I tried smile.gif

I'm 172 cm and 77 kg, and I can carry a 4x12 cab around on my own (I guess I pack a little strength after all) tongue.gif
But a combo is still easier to move around, although I've had a few 4x12 without having any problems moving them around smile.gif

So you're right, it's not that big that it should pose a problem.. It's just bigger..

With around 80lbs (37kg) 4x12 is pretty heavy, I'm pretty sure it cannot be carried around easily by one person, possibly on some distances like 10 meters or so, and if on wheels but still... wink.gif

I worked in a company where I had to carry beer kegs into basements of bars and stuff when I was 17 years old (to get the money for my first guitar equipment...) Those Beer kegs are between 50-60 kg and they don't even have handles like the 4x12 cabs! Carrying my cab arround feels like a piece of cake now when I think back to this work!

Oh and we almost forgot: 4x12cabs come with 4 little wheels so ou can roll them pretty easy most of the time!

50-60kg down the stairs without handles?? Are you telling me you are a superman laugh.gif just kidding of course, we all did tough jobs at young age to support our needs, some worked for gear, some worked to have some pocket money, but the essence of the thing is that 36kg should not be considered something that a one person can move with ease. Of course all that hard work will later be rewarded with good sound, so.. who likes it, he gets it. smile.gif

The ENGL XXL Pro Cab weights 63kg blink.gif Even the normal ENGL Pro cabs are 50kg. I wonder why they are so much more heavy than marshall cabs. But of course even those can be lugged arround by a single person. But do you really want to play a gig afterwards?

But there's another interesting point to this. People will help you to lug around that 4x12 cab. But the combo you'll have to transport yourself rolleyes.gif

The goal of the XXL cab is to create more low end with more room (which works very well), they use thicker woods and they have those big metal frontpanels which are 15 kgs alone!
