Looking For An Amp, again

After unsuccessfully trying to get a krank rev jr pro I thought about my idea again and decided that it's probably not the way to go. So here I am again looking for an amp to play at home (for now).

So this is what I'm looking for:

Type: Tube Head
Price Range: 1000€-2000€ (after 2000€ the prices seem to get unreasonable)
Styles: Shred/Neoclassical (Malmsteen), Classic Heavy Metal (Saxon), Power Metal (Hammerfall, Stratovarius, Sabaton), Thrash, to Death Metal

Occasionally I try to play some blues but I'll get myself a Blackheart Killerant Head for that so the amp doesn't need to do that.

So far I'm considering this amps:
- ENGL Blackmore
- ENGL Savage
- Marshall JVM410h

The Blackmore is my current favorite. I just really dig that engl tone. The only thing I really miss there is that warm smooth Marshall lead tone. Also it doesn't seem to be as brutal as say a peavy 6505 or an engl powerball but then again I'm not going to play *core stuff.

The Savage was my "dream amp" for quite some time. But somehow the backheart seems to do the same thing only simpler. The only two savage features I miss in the blackmore are the smooth/rough and depth punch switches. But the savage is also lacking a good warm lead tone (think of slash or zack wylde).

The Marshall JVM410h delivers that warm lead tone. The clean tone is also ok (on most Marshalls it's to warm an dirty
for me). But I just couldn't get that engl metal tone out of it. The overdrive sounds were always pretty warm and dirty.

Right now it looks like I'll get the blackmore and maybe later the JVM410h too (hey Blackmore + JVM410h + Killer Ant is still cheaper than the Engl special edition and I just love getting new gear!).

So my question for you guys, are there other amps which I'm missing? Am I wrong with some of my assumptions (may be I was just to stupid to use all those knobs on the JVM410h)?

Cheers,
Jonas

The blackmore is the warmest sounding ENGL there is (and the only one I would consider playing, the rest is too cold - you beloved ENGL tone^^). You could use an Overdrive or EQ pedal to get a smooth lead tone out of the Blackmore, maybe a nice reverb or delay too will help with a lead tone...

The JVM is the heaviest sounding marshall there is, the overdrive 2 channel has a lower center frequency then standard marshall tones (marshall is arround 620Hz, the Od2 on the jvm is arround 500Hz where Mesa Boogie is at)
That makes the od2 channel more modern sounding (like a rectifier), the JVM has almost as much gain as a Powerball but the sound characteristics are diffrent...If I want an ENGL like tone I use my MXR 10 band Equalizer in the effectsloop and just cut out the frequencies until I get that Cold, modern, sterile ENGL tone^^ (you get it I don't like ENGls)

Other than that ultra modern high gain tone, the JVM does everything you want, ESPECIALLY THE CLEAN TONE!!!
The clean channel (green mode) is an exact copy of a Fender Switching and therefore the best and cleanest clean a marshall ever had (it's Better then ENGLs best clean amp, the fireball!)

Sounds to me you're looking for an ENGL Invader rahter than a Blackmore. It's got the ENGL character and fits your description like a glove since you can get that Maiden:ish Marshall tone too, runs EL34 tubes for a change and delivers on low volumes!!! Even the 150 watt model, though I think I'd stick to 100 watts here.

I know I want one.

To me the Blackmore sounds very similar to the Savage - also in terms of warmth. The *balls sound cold, compressed and fizzy to me laugh.gif

Somehow I doubt that this would work wink.gif

So far I prefer the clean of the blackmore but that's just taste.

I sure did. But what would you get for that money?

I kind of dislike the idea of a big rack because there's so much more things that can go wrong and that I'll have to fiddle with. I'd prefer something that just works.

I didn't like the Invader when I played it. But I can't exactly tell what I didn't like so it could be wrong. Hell, I hated all my gear some days ago. Interestingly enough the gear of my guitar teacher sounded bad too, so I figured out that my ears were shut because of a cold laugh.gif When listening to it now it seems to have some really smooth lead tones. So I'll definitely check that one out.

Still interested in other suggestions, may be of less known companies smile.gif

Elmwood modena 60 or 90. I never played one since they were only on order basis, now there's one in a store around here but I havn't tried it so I can't really say. But a qualified guess is that this ROCKS and is a keeper for life.

From your suggestions I would pick the Savage, it is a very good and versatile amp and definitely worth the money.

Good to hear that from you but shouldn't you endorse boogies? biggrin.gif Can you elaborate a bit more on why you prefer the savage over the blackmore?

MickeM, the Elmwood amps seem to be more for classic rock than metal. But the only dealer in switzerland seems to be on the other end of the country and hell they even talk another language over there rolleyes.gif. The Framus Dragon and Laboga Hector seems to be interesting however. I've even seen the Hector in a local guitar store. I wonder if it's still there. smile.gif

The classic mesas don't seem to be made for what I want. The rectifiers are very expensive here, and I just couldn't get them to get that tone I'm looking for. With the mentioned ENGL's I was able to get everything but a lead tone in a matter of minutes! I've also tested a roadking which costs around 4000€ but even the roadking just couldn't blow me away. There are bands which I like a lot and which are using mesa boogies (hello marcus) but they don't seem to work for me. May be I'm just doing it wrong I don't know. mellow.gif

Then you must be doing somethin wrong with the amp settings! ^^

Jeff Loomis gets his lead tone out of a Powerball, and so do Chris Broderick, Muhammed Sucimez and Marty Friedman>>> which means there are lead tones but they might be hard to dial in...

Uhm as far as I know Jeff is using an ENGL Special Edition. And wikipedia agrees. Anyway you are probably right! Maybe I should just experiment with some reverb and delay. It tends to smooth out the tone without loosing all the high end. That's actually an interesting point, when testing the marshall lead tone I used the integrated digital reverb! So maybe the accuracy of the ENGL's together with the lack of effects just showed me my sloppiness laugh.gif
