The pickups are mounted in the pickup ring with a screw, down through a spring and through the pickup-metal-platform.
Without the ring the pu would sit loose, an alternative is to mount the pickup with a couple screws directly into the body. The downside to that is that you can't raise or lower it. I did that on a singlecoil once but before putting the pickup in place I put a screw in the middle (in the cavity) and a spring mounted around it. So the head of the screw would mark the bottom position while the spring will push the pickup upwards. Then I put the pu ontop of this and fastened it with one screw on each side into the body. Make the screws prytty lon so it stays in place, max 2,5-3 mm thick so you won't destroy the thread on the pickup holes. Now it works to lower and raise the singlecoil pickup while it's mounted in the body of the guitar. -------------------- My bands homepage

I will come by and beat you up for installing purple pickups in a Les Paul!
Joke aside, the only thing you can do is to direct mount the pickups into the body, a luthier can do that, but believe me it is not going to look nice! Les Pauls aren't factory buitl for a direct mount so there will be a lot of space arround the pickup left where you can look directly into the pickup cavity (which might be badly painted, or not painted at all) This is how it looks on a guitar that was built for a direct mount: http://www.atomicguitarworks.com/images/flourine1_xiuv.jpg Now imagine a 1/4 inch gap going arround your pickups>not so nice I would get a set of pickups rings in a diffrent colour, maybe in gold to match the hardware! -------------------- Gear: - Jackson USA Select KV2 King V with EMG 81/85 - Gibson Les Paul Custom Arctic White with EMG 81/85 - Ibanez Rg 8527 J Custom 7-String with DiMarzio Evolution and Air Norton - Peavey 6505+ head with Marshall 1960AV 4x12 cab - Peavey Vypyr 30 Practice Amp - Dunlop Crybaby From Hell, Maxon OD808, Boss TU-2, MXR CarbonCopy, ISP Decimator, MXR Custom Audio Electronics Booster |

Change the pick up rings as Zakk says! You can get them in quite a few different colours! Haha i love purple. I'm going to look for some purple or white rings thanks for the tip -------------------- Gibson SG-3 Faded Epiphone Thunderbird Ovation CC48 Vox AD30VT Vintage U.S. Peavey Microbass Orange Tiny Terror w/ 212 Cabinet Creativity |
