Hi,

Been playing since i was 13, 40 now.

Grew up playing Schenker, UFO, Sabbath, Scorpions, AC/DC etc., - biggest influence was Michael Schenker. Now into Zakk Wylde, Vai, Satriani to name just a few

Self taught by playing along to records of the above, "parrot fashion" note for note - my biggest mistake EVER!!! Now thats all I can do, copy. I´m a walking Xerox machine for guitar.

I am now incapable of the following:

- Being creative and writing my own music
- Improvising over the most basic of chord shapes, no imagination whatsoever, even basic blues
- Following a rhythm, unless its down picking thrash, Metallica style (I feel I have no sense of rhythm)
- I cannot sing and play over so much as 3 chords, I cant even talk and play let alone sing.
- Complete mental block around scales and how to remember and use them
- Applying structure to my practices

Above is what I want to remedy and am starting from the basics...Again. How to use a metronome, and have been following Ivan Milenkovic basic pentatonic lessons.

Can I play? Yes, i think so. Note for note I can play anything from Randy Rhoads´s "Dee" to pretty much anything by Metallica...But its more like guitar karaoke. And I wouldnt say I play it with any sort of conviction or feeling, I just play it.

Any thoughts on a direction, what should my daily practice routine look like (can spare half hour to an hour a day only, due to work commitments) would be greatly appreciated or if any of you guys made a similar mistake when learning and how did you get yourself out of it.

Cheers
Lee

Welcome to GMC Lee!
I think you just need to work on the solo lessons and theory here at GMC in order to learn how to apply scales and improvise.Check out phrasing lessons too.Start with intervals, arpeggios and work you way to major scale and others.Since you have been playing a long time now , I'm sure you will grasp those very fast.Regarding rhythm , check out this series by instructor Joe : https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/lessonser...t-Rhythm-Guitar

Hi Lee from another Lee!

Welcome aboard mate, your problems sound a lot like mine, i could learn a song but didnt know why it all worked together, you've come to the right place though!

I found Ivans pentatonic and modes lessons really helpful (Theyre in the series section now i think) and also Muris lessons on "Jumping Around" which really gets your brain working on note placement across the fretboard. Heres a link:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/lesson-series.htm

Anything theory related check out Andrews theory lessons, just make sure you have your brain engaged before delving in there!

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...hp?showforum=25

If you need any help at all please feel free to post, the guys on here are some of the best players around and everybody is extremely helpful and friendly so dont be shy! smile.gif

27 years of playing, even carbon copies, is still remarkably good going. Some great links have been provided already. So getting some theory and fretboard knowledge under your belt will surely make the creativity you've been searching for blossom.
Enjoy! This is a great place to learn.

Great to have you here man!

If you have many cool licks at your disposal then it's only about a bit of theory and some serious jamming to unlock you creativity. Creativity also comes with practice and experience.

You have found guitar-Mecca right here, so start rocking! cool.gif

Welcome Lee,
I would start working a bit on theory and how all works together.
It might seem overwhelming first, but soon you'll see that everyting is related to each other and it will help your playing a lot I think.

welcome man, I agree with every advice here.
collabs will help you to create your own solos or melodies. but you´ll need something more to write your own music. but guess what? you are in best place to learn cool.gif .

feel free to upload some idea you have, and we´ll come with some feedback and suggestions.

hope you find your way here wink.gif

cheers!
