Here is a tune I have been working on recently - where I have experimented with a new, lower voice. As usual suggestions are very welcome as I am trying to learn how to make my mixes (etc) as good as possible. Thanks for listening!

A Loner (now at iTunes)

Do you know who I am?

- I have planted a seed in your brain
That makes the pain stay the same

Unleash the beast!
At least I have come to join the feast

What a surprise...

A loner - never meant to be your fall
A loner - never meant to see you crawl
A loner - descendant of your act

You don't seem to get it

- I am coming, no in fact, I am running
I will haunt you in your sleep, no relief

Bring back the beast
Don't settle for the least

Open your eyes...

A loner - wasn't meant to be your fall
A loner - never meant to see you crawl
A loner - descendant of your act

SOLO

A loner - wasn't meant to be your fall
A loner - never meant to see you crawl
A loner - descendant of your act

Great, love the chorus, its so catchy. The song sounds a little bit like System of a down to mee, especially the chorus.
I like it.

Thanks - yes also the "gallop" riff gives me System vibes!

The chorus is really catchy! I like the firing riffs and the melodic but simple bass under it! The "new" voice definitely resembles a bit of Tankian and a bit of Rammstein vocals. The solo builds up cleverly but still remains kinda rhapsodic (lots of time-feel shifts) which IMO is very effective and I really like the tone!

I'm no good at mixing but for me the tone of the intro riffs and the galloping part is a bit unusual. For me it lacks a bit of lower frequencies or did you simply but some kind of filter over it? Later on it becomes more natural (probably because of the bass?)

Overall this is very-very fine song with a vibe that is original! I love it!

Hey Kris, I really like the chorus! It's a bit more open then the verses, I like that! Solo is cool to! You developed your melodic ideas, they aren't the same as your old speedpicking lines!

Thanks for the awesome feedback Berko - now that you say it I get a similar feeling. I am thinking that it could be that the original guitar sound should have had a little more bass frequencies. I still think the mix as a whole has some bottom in it - but next time I will probably follow your advice and dial in a little more low-end from scratch.

Thanks Kaznie and Kjutte - it's always a challenge to not repeat yourself too much when soloing. This time around I was in drop C# so I could experiment with some wilder bending (thanks to the lower string tension)

Great tune Kris!!

All I can think of now is maybe more low end in riff guitars,
rest of it was ok imo. smile.gif

Sounds awesome, very good style. For me ti falls somewhere between Metallica's "Loverman" song and S.O.A.D songs, but in a very positive way.

I really like the mix, it has a good dimension to it, perhaps trying to master the the overall mix a bit. It sounds a bit "edgy" to my taste, but it is not bad, just something that I would try experimenting with.

cheers Kris, you rock smile.gif

Awesome to get your comment Muris - you're right I will probably experiment with a bassier sound next time. I have a constant fear of getting a too bassy guitar sound, which usually ruins everything since there are so many dubs.

Thanks Ivan - I agree with this as well. It is certainly the edgiest mix I have done so far...we will see if I will revisit this sound again in the future - or stick to something a little more standard.

Indeed, working with low frequencies can be really tricky,
most of the time either our ear cannot hear what's happening down there
or speakers can't produce the subs!
The way some producers are dealing with this issue
is to cut trebs the on same guitar channel to compensate
lows without pushing them at all, it's like weighting. smile.gif

Ah interesting - so do you mean that by removing trebs you get more bass this way? (if so that could explain where the bass went in this mix - there's loads of treble)

Just like that, removing and not adding. smile.gif

Edit, you'll probably have to boost channel's level afterwards,
less trebs or whatever always results in less volume as well. smile.gif
