It's a sad reflection on society if we expect women to be useless unless they are beautiful.

oh, I don't know. I watched 10 seconds of it, and that was all I wanted to see. I quit watching tv 5 years ago, it is mindless. To me, a singer should have several things. A decent voice, and be attractive. Preferably a great voice. But I will take a decent voice and good looks over great voice and dumpy, as will the rest of the honest public. To me, it is just a job requirement. I don't play NBA basketball not having the physical traits, so should I complain? The non-attractive should play an instrument. Come on, get real, planet earth calling GMC! For the most part, the public has always expected the singer to be somewhat of a looker, that will never change, even if you want to pretend it should. Shoot, I am bald and ugly. I figure were I younger and interested in being in a band, that would disqualify me from being a singer. Because that is just common sense. Yeah, we will have novelties, and the audience will pretend that they don't care once in awhile, just to feel good about themselves, but no, it will never change, and really, why should it? You look at the singer most of the time in a band, or at least most people do. They should have something good to look at, just part of the show. Nothing wrong with that. Nobody is killing anybody's first born here.

Im a little tired of the advantages given to the singers from the classical school. i dont find that she is complete in terms of tecnique and definatly not looks (which i think she benefits from because of the zero-to-hero-effect), i find that the rythmic singers are neglected.
but overall i dont really like these talent-shows as those who respect themselves dont attend

Interesting point fkalich. The modern Western world has held vision - and therefore visual image - as the most important sense since Plato.

So I think you're right that the popular media - including the music industry - holds image to be very important. Even to the extent where actual musical ability comes second to image. Perhaps a large part of that is to do with marketing and PR both of which seem wedded to some Platonic notion of ideal beauty as equated with visual image. They then can't separate visual image from any other sense sensation. As we're bombarded by this from birth it is something that we tend to tacitly expect and accept this socialisation.

My daughter, who is nine, will watch a 'talent' program and make comments like, 'He's ok but he's ugly' or 'they can play but their clothes are rubbish'. That's despite the amount of times that my wife and I talk to her about looking beyond the outward appearance.

Ultimately image is regarded by the popular entertainment industry as an important part of the package. If you don't have it then getting anywhere in the industry becomes a much harder struggle. In Susan Boyle's favour she could always promote her self -and seems to be doing so - as 'talented but not beautiful'. Been done many times but for the popular media such artists rarely get the same level of publicity and promotion as the focus becomes how quirky they are rather than how musical. Sort of 'never mind how well the bear dances, it's a wonder that the bear dance at all'.

As usual I am the cynic, but I believe that whole thing was a set-up. People who have that kind of talent know it early on, and if she'd wanted to be a professional singer, she could have done it long ago. And anyone can get a glamour shot makeover, you can see by the expression on her face that she deliberately dressed down and talked with that common accent.

Just my $.02.

I share ur views. Hate that they put people in boxes as stereotypes, its so primitive and unenlightening. and yes, her talent is insulficient compared to profesionals who allready have a career
