i had the same problem as you! i used to break strings once a week, because i have a floyd style bridge, i use it pretty often, and i practice about 25-30 hour a week. i also tried elixir, but they were breaking in less than a week.

now i am using ernie ball RPS .09 strings, and they last me about 3 weeks,
its not much, but at least i can feel secure if i change them before a gig or a rehearsal!

I play Elixir only, I play pretty often and strings stay
for a month so I guess it has nothing to do with the brand.
Maybe there is something on the neck (a fret perhaps)
that cuts it in the middle OR you just had bad luck, another option. smile.gif

I've been playing with the same set of elixirs on my strat since November!!! they are still bright, and I play an average of 2 hours/day. Unbelievable. I used Dean Markley before and they last 3/4 weeks max before becoming black! (literally)

I've never broken a string on my Strat or SGs, but I remember that many years ago I used to break lots of them with a tele I had. I now believe it was that guitar that had a sharp bridge...

I use both, no planning, just switch from time to time,
polyweb has more coating so it feels more coated. biggrin.gif

Oh cool!! I intend to try out some DRs on my bass! smile.gif
Have you tried the color coated ones ?? Does the color stay on or it dissolves ?

Unfortunately, I haven't tried the color coated, but I'm sure they are great! smile.gif

I use nanoweb elixirs, the medium .11 gauge. I haven't been playing long, but after trying out a few different strings, I found that i just like these more. They also do stay on my guitar for a long while before I feel they need changing. I only broke a string once (the high e) and it was because my tuner's battery was dying, so it wasn't giving me very accurate readings, so I tightened it a bit too much and it just snapped in half. I think everyone has given you good advice though. Maybe trying another set of strings would be best, just to see if it happens with those too.

It could be that your bridge or frets are set up wrong.
Take your guitar for set up and see how it goes after that. In a long run its better to pay up to 70$ for setup now then waste 100's of dollars on E string smile.gif

Btw, how do you know you should change strings ? When they become black ? Is it possible to change only 3 strings, like the 3 highs which get used faster ? Or will this unbalance the fretboard ?

It's better to change all of them at once, otherwise some will sound brighter than others. Before elixirs I used to change strings when they became "black" and didn't slide well.
