Computer Virus, Help please!

My computer has a virus. It's called win defender. At first it made loads of pop-ups try and convince me I had a load of other viruses and I should buy some software to get rid of them.

I ran McAfee and it removed a lot of stuff and I'm not getting the pop-ups anymore. However, when I am browsing sites (sites that I know there are no problems with like google and facebook and GMC) it occasionally comes up in my internet explorer saying the site is potentially bad and I should buy win defender. So to an extent the virus is still there, just in my internet explorer.

Does anyone know how to get rid of this virus totally? I looked on some sites and they recommend downloading stuff to remove it, but I don't know which of those sites are legitimate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It's supposed to be, but there is a virus that mimics it

If I click add 'full software' it sends me to a site that is clearly dodgy

I hope it's not a rootkey type virus - they're a pain. Thankfully, if you have internet access there are always options on what you can do. I recommend using a free program called HiJackThis - and posting your results on a techy forum. They're usually happy to help you pin point the problem and how to get your system clean again.

You can try battling the virus for days or you can take the easy route and reinstall windows. Backup first though smile.gif

Be sure to scan your pc with an anti-virus software or Registry Mechanic. The last one is an awesome tool that repairs your computer. smile.gif

Also try spyware removal programs such as Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D and Malwarebytes. I've read that malwarebytes has effectively removed the win defender virus. Good luck

I had this too, took me a while to clean it out.
ad-aware, avast, and Malwarebytes are the programs I used (in that order too) to fix it. They are all free, or have free versions that you can use. Its definitely worth trying out because i know that virus is a pain with all the little pop-ups constantly appearing. Also try downloading registry mechanic, they have a free version as well and it'll scan your registry files on your computer.

Avast is a great program too, i'm thinking of buying the full version.
Hope this helps man
