Am I the only one who finds accusing a band for plagiarism completly ridiculous?

I think its kind of ridiculous too. While it does sound a bit similar, its not exact. I mean, its music, eventually there's going to be some things that sound similar, that's just how it works.

Well - this could get heated and we've had a thread or two on the matter previously. Personally, I agree that lots of songs will have similarities with lots of other songs because some chord progressions are just so natural on the ears. And there's nothing wrong with taking someone's theme and developing it to your own style. That's great and it's been done for centuries. But I think with Coldplay it's just laziness and they take the biscuit - I read somewhere (don't know if it was a reliable source tho) that they even admitted to plagiarism.
Ice Ice Baby anyone?

+1 I can see some parallels with Cat Stevens, but with Satriani it is much stronger in my opinion... but lets just be patient, I am almost sure some other guys will follow and also sue Coldplay, seems to be a big fashion in the moment tongue.gif
Too bad there is no Blind Guardian song with those chords rolleyes.gif

There are advantage after you have killed your tv, I never heard of these guys until mentioned here.

Are you familiar with 50's American White Bread pre-Beatles music. These guys remind of of that, only the current epoch variety. Like this guy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s41ogaIC-hA

I really see no big difference, same old shuck, just for a different generation and time.

And as I look at it, if they were gone, nothing of value would be lost to the world, so I hope Satriani and Stevens get their money, whether they deserve it or not. Both of these made significant contributions. Stevens really had some fine songs, quite a few. And besides he drew neat water colors on his albums.

I do think the version of them mixed together sounds like a great song lol. I don't particularly like either song separately though lol. I still think Joe will lose out as the comparisons he makes could be made to many other artists and songs that have a lot more similarities.

Shouldn't cat stevens be suing Satriani as well??!?!?

/joking

but seriously, what if some Joe Schmoe wrote a song in 1954 that has the same melody, is he going to sue Cat Stevens?

It's all a bit ridiculous

From all we know the guy who wrote a song with that melody in 1954 probably would. It is ridiculous how common this is now (waits for next time someone targets Coldplay...probably wont be long).
