Hello guys

I am wondering how much a pick can affect your playing. I meen switching from a poor quality pick to a pick that seems ideal for you, how much can it affect your skill, how much you enjoy playing etc.

Try different picks , and see for yourself which one fits better. If you were asking me I would recommend you a thick pick , like a Jazz III or a Jim Dunlop Stubby.

So try them and let us know.

I use semi hard one. It can still slightly bend when struming and it's also hard enough for picking. I find it important if I want to execute all my notes the way I like.

My pick has the name Jim dunlop on it and I can hardly see it as more than 1mm thick, I must go to the music store soon and buy alot of different picks smile.gif

Switched to the smaller Jazz III's and it was like night and day, for me at least. I liked the tone better, the feel, the grip etc... You will just have to try more and find what you like the most. smile.gif

That response came out of left field. If you are not American, that is colloquial for "what the ????". Pick is important. I have one pick I like, only one, so I think it is important to find the one you like. I like this one. 1.3mm is ok, but I prefer the 1.5. It is stiffer than other nylon 1.5 picks, you get a real crisp strike with it. And I like the grip.

Looks pretty promising, I`ll try to find it in local shops smile.gif Bad that there isn`t 2.0mm model.. About the grip, I have never tried picks with that surface (anti-sliding, ok I don`t know how it`s called) so I use Zsolt`s method on all my picks - scratch both pick sides with knife\scissors, and it`s never slides out, really good thing smile.gif

I like the Dunlop Tortex 1.35mm the one that's very very sharp, once I've tried that pick I could never went back.
I think the pick is a matter of comfort. When you get the right pick you'll be playing the same things that you've played but more relaxed in a certain way, at least that was my experience.

Finding the right pick is important, they affect the tone and also playability, but it's a long journey, so just buy a few, play a lot, and you'll slowly be auto-guided to your "perfect pick"

I'm used to J dunlop nylon 1mm, but lately I'm leaning towards Jazz IIIs, and who knows what will come after smile.gif

Try as many picks as you can. First, try their feel but also bare in mind that different thickness of picks will affect the tone as well.

Personally, I use 0.94 Dunlop USA picks which are hard picks (they don't bend at all) and have a great action. Thicker picks can have a bit less action but a better grip. Your choice smile.gif

I would rather play on a loaned guitar, than with loaned picks. I think it has a big influence. Maybe not on the sound, but on your comfortlevel, and therefore your ability to play good.

Pick does affect your sound AND your playing.
Try as many picks as you can and see what fits the best for you
OR with certain style that you might play etc.
Per example, I use pretty thick pick for electric guitar most of the time
but in studio I always bring lots of different gauges with me
to be able to get as much sound options as possible, this one goes for the record. smile.gif

I have about a dozen other types with grips that did nothing for me. I think the big thing for me is that the nylon is harder on these. So you get a crisper strike than typical nylon picks. The grip is just kind of nice, not essential, but as grips go, I think this is a good design, raised little dots, like a cat paw. I feel you can relax easier, as you won't lose your pick flying. They also last forever. They make a thinner line of the same design. But I think they may use a different formula of nylon on those thinner ones, not as hard. Seems like it to me. I prefer fatter anyway.

As has been said, have to try them all. People have different techniques, and hold it differently, and different styles. For example, I have to feel that the very fat picks are more suitable for more metal type play. Although Brian May did play with a British coin, so to each his own, you just have to find what works for you.

edit: as soon as I say "fat pick for metal" some guy who mostly plays rock ballads will tell me other wise. I do play a lot of metal lessons, so I need a stiffer pick, can't see how you can play metal with a thin pick, so the one I use is pretty suitable for a lot of things. As soon as I say this, some death metal guy is going to say he uses a .73mm pick.

Well you right, I use those fat picks for metal smile.gif Fact that they last very long is very intriguing. My Dunlop Delrin 500 2.0 last for 4-5 hours of heavy rhythm and then edges become blunt and not straight and artificial harmonics sound much more weaker.. I hate this. For example dunlop gator 1.5 last only for 40-50 minutes, and after that no more "sharp" sounding any more. So I`m trying to find pick that has veeeery hard edges and that don`t become deformed pretty fast.. Fender and some Jim dunlops I tried are quite weak too. Of course if I don`t play rhythm picks last for weeks dry.gif
Hehe coin is very uncomfortable in my opinion, but it didn`t deformate at all laugh.gif
