I would say that sites like GMC and ESPECIALLY youtube is what has made it possible for these kids to be playing so well after just a few short years. No way you could do that when I started playing in 1988. You had tab books sure.....but to be able to actually SEE somebody playing stuff etc., makes a huge difference. I remember seeing a tab that was a sweeped arpeggio and thinking I was playing it OK.....even read the description in the article etc,. but I was still playing it wrong. Now you can get on youtube and do a search on sweeped arpeggios and find a billion vids of somebody explaining and demonstrating how to sweep. So now you can fix a problem......or never even develop one in the first place......in a matter of minutes. I'll bet it was 2 or 3 years before I figured out my sweeping technique was all wrong.

Another thing that REALLY hindered my progress was KURT COBAIN!!!!! There was about a 10-12 year period where virtuosity on guitar was frowned upon. You couldn't find an article on tapping, sweeping, AP or any kind of lead technique to save your life. I'll NEVER forgive Nirvana for that!!!!! mad.gif mad.gif laugh.gif

Dave Grohl better hope I never run into him up here in the Pacific Northwest...... tongue.gif laugh.gif

I think the information availability is greater now, but 80ties music was very technically demanding, and there were some awesome players then. I don't feel that the information abundance alone is what makes people to play good, it's just their hard work. These guys used other available technologies at the time, tape recorders, books, and other stuff. In a way this is very good cause they used ear more..

Nirvana was a phenomenon when they came up, and they did change the global audience focus on grunge style, but other types of music still remained. It is normal that in decade that comes music from the last decade will be passe, but these things stay and mix, and after two decades it all returns in a different new form.

You know though, the internet has actually been around since the 60's. it was invented as part of the technology race between the USSR and the U.S. here's a video of someone testing one of the original modems, pretty neat stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9dpXHnJXaE oh, and i think i was playing for about 4-6 before we had something other than dial up....which i never used because it was too slow.

I voted "One or two years". I did play some classic guitar when I was a little younger, and I trusted my guitar teacher with my life, but when we got a better PC with easier access to Internet and found out about GMC, I instantly started despising my teacher, knowing what insane pedagogical skill lie in sites like this ! smile.gif

I started out from day 1 to learn how to read tabs, then I learned the intro for The Bard's Song upside down.

An interesting question - I started long before internet but when the internet became available, I really wasn't into guitar at the time (I had been meaning to get back into it but never really did until a few years ago). My foray into using the internet started with lunchtime serfing with someone mentioning something about check out some song. I realized that there was something to this and I came across a few lessons here and there but really couldn't take advantage. Then I came across a lesson from this site and I was amazed by it - after viewing several lessons for a month or two, I decided that this would be a great investment. I still can't take full advantage of it (as I still have dialup in my area) so I have to watch the lessons at work and download the guitar pro files at home and try to learn them that way. When highspeed comes to my isolated home, I am going to be ecstatic - nevertheless, the things I have learned in the last year far outstrip the previous 20.

I'm too young I guess... I started to play in 2004/2005. I could find some tabs (eventhough I stopped using them as soon as I learned a couple of scales, because almost all tabs I found were wrong), but there still wasn't youtube. I remember first seeing youtube through a link of that famous funtwo canon rock video hahah
I guess youtube was the most helpful resource for me, I could see guys playing and it motivated me a lot as well!

Played not so seriously for about a year or so back in 1993 without any internet. Bought loads of original guitar tab books though (still have them lying around smile.gif)

I played a few years "before internet", back in the early 90s. Got my first guitar & used to play & sing Springsteen & U2 songs, was fun, but I was stuck, and eventually quit sad.gif

Good thing inet became popular & GMC appeared cool.gif smile.gif smile.gif
