Does anybody know of a downloadable (free would be nice) programme that can be used to record my guitar onto my laptop?
How do you folks record youself if not onto your pc? Glynb |

I personally am satisfied with the POD Studio UX1, but you can of course go for the cheaper version POD Studio GX which has no microphone input. When you have this, you can download REAPER (free) which is a DAW, that means you can record yourself, import MIDI tracks and assign VSTs (virtual instruments) to them. You can find tutorials, hints, etc. here or here.

POD Studio is a soundcard. It serves as and interface between instrument and PC by having standard 6.3mm mono female HI-Z inputs so you can plug in your guitar straight into the interface without the need of other devices (such as DIbox).

I recommend free recording software Reaper : http://www.reaper.fm/
+ audio interface like Pod studio ux1 (or even GX if you want only guitar to record) Pod studio is a sound card (external) it connects to PC/laptop via usb. You can then root all the sounds from OS to go through it and just connect your pc speakers to the interface itself. +1 on Pod Studio & Reaper, they work really well

One important thing about POD Studio (or any external USB interface) is the fact that laptop integrated soundcard and speakers will be obsolete, so you have to get headphones or speakers (or both) for monitoring your sound.

POD in combination with some sort of DAW (Nuendo, Cubase, Reaper etc) and you are all set !

In my beginnings I used to record myself with Audacity (Free DAW), now I use Cubase sx3 as a DAW and line 6 POD x3

If you load some other software like Guitar Rig or Amplitube Fender you will have more latency (more than 30ms), and possibly not being able to use them. If you get a good external sound card like EMU0404 USB for example, you can run any third party software with latency less then 10ms and it will run smoothly. With 0404USB you get Amplitube LE and other various great software (among else Cubase 4 LE). So the choice is up to you really.
