I'm having some problems with Guitar Pro.. I'm having some trouble tabbing the riffs I come up with, because of note duration.

For example: I just wrote this folk/celtic-ish lick

---------------------------------------------
-------------------------------8-------------
---9-9-7-9-10-9-7-9----9-9-7-9---10-9-10-----
-7-------------------7-----------------------
---------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------

It sounds like this:
Attached File  randomlick.mp3 ( 227.14K ) Number of downloads: 500

But no matter what I do, I can't get it to fit in a guitar pro tab. I just get those red lines of doom when I try..

What I'm wondering is what I can do? Do I have to read some more theory on note duration, or are my timing in my licks just absurd?

Any input appriciated!

Most likely it's because of time signature,
from what I hear it's either 6/4 or 6/8, depends of the tempo.
Fix that first and try again. smile.gif

you have to set the right time signature and have correct number of notes/duration to fit within the bar precisely

Yeh it sounds like compound time so change the time signature to 6/8, or 3/4, and see if that works.

From what I can hear the rhythm sounds like (in 6/8): 8th, 16th, 16th, 16th, 16th, 8th, 16th, 8th, 16th.

Edit: typo

See attached a quick GP file with the lick put in 6/8. I think Matt was spot on with the durations wink.gif .

Thanks a lot everyone! Amateur me didn't even think about the time signature tongue.gif
Thanks for the file, Roger! I'll learn more about time signatures and keep working on it ^^

If someone for some reason should be curious how the lick turned out, here's a clip (including drums, rhythm guitar and bass) of how far I got before I "forgot" about it and went to work on some other licks tongue.gif

Attached File  Project_Folk_V4.mp3 ( 607.35K ) Number of downloads: 201

It may turn out half-decent if I work more on the mixing and try to work out more riffs and a solo from the song..

If you want to have the lick fit into 4/4, you could always just use triplets. smile.gif
