G'day Anders
Watched your vids - youve got a spot on sense of timing, and obviously some cool chops there dude. The one thing I would say is keep up the practise, but balance it with doing other stuff - the times i get fed up with my guitar are when i get too one tracked, in other words thats all i do...so when it goes badly i get depressed! - I find if i practise hard, then do something completelty different (go the the gym, play a sport, learn another language etc), it puts playing the guitar into perspective - remember, the main thing is to enjoy playing!!
Cheers
Conrad

Learn another language... blink.gif huh.gif I suppose if I tried to learn Mandarin Chinese it would make my trying to get my AP chops in order seem like a snap....... tongue.gif laugh.gif

Damn Conrad......do you sleep.... tongue.gif laugh.gif

I´ve lissened to some advice and well I just started practising a classical lesson on my nylon guitar.

That still seems like more practicing/learning and not much playing. Your video suggests that your basic techniques are well known and comfortable already, your rhythm is nice and stable as well.

I'd really look for some tracks to jam and improvise over and add that to my daily "guitar time" if I were in your position; something to break the monotony of tasks that are purely for practice/exercise.

Glad you've gotten off the idea of quitting though smile.gif

I noticed a couple things you could try when watching your videos.

The way you pick is the same as i do. Backwards from most of the guys here. What i mean is that your curling your thumb back and angling the pick towards the neck instead of the bridge.

This is not wrong, personally i find more tone control picking this way. But...because of the way you and I pick its not advantageous to place the guitar on your right leg like that. Because you have to bend your wrist more to acheive a constant pick stroke. Try holding the guitar on your left leg, with the body between your legs. More like a classical guitar.

Also, you fret notes similar to myself as well, what i noticed though is that if your going to fret notes with your hand like that dont wrap your thumb around the neck, you have less control with your hand at a 90 degree angle to the neck like that if your thumb is wrapped around the neck. You have to float your hand more and keep your thumb on the back of the neck.

If you find you are more comfortable with your thumb wrapped around the neck you have to adjust your hand angle so you dont twist your wrist the way you are. Angle your hand more like 45 degrees to the neck if your going to wrap your thumb around.

Either of the techniques that you decide on are not right or wrong, just personal preference.

The one other thing you need to try and correct though is your anchoring your pinky, i did this early on but i realized that it was holding my speed back because i was fighting with my own hand. Try to float your picking hand more above the strings instead of using that "Pinky clench" that you are doing.

Besides all of this i think the others are right you have good pick attack and tone, and your rhythm is good. I think if you just take time to refine your posture and picking problems that you will see a marked improvement.

Daniel

Hi,
I'm not an instructer or anything but I cant see anything wrong with what you did. Why dont you have a rest from slaving over a hot scale and metronome and play something you really like with a backing track just for a break. For example I did some of the classic rock solo's which worked for me, I did 'The Loner' by Gary Moore, and the solo to 'All Right Now' and 'Time' by David Gilmore, all right, they're not fast but I've found all the practicing thats done with the excersises from the instructers on this site make your playing sound a lot more professional than it otherwise would have or did.

My problem was that when I got to a fast run my right hand would tense up in expectaion of it and I blew it every time but since I've practiced relaxing my right hand more I get it right more often unless I tense up with habit. I've found its hard to get rid of a bad habit once its established.
Just remember you're not the only one who on occasions feels like doing a Hendrix and smashing up the amp with the guitar the difference being with me it would be frustration not show.
Tony

Thank you for a interesting and helpful answer.

I´ve never thought of the picking part that way, I will test to hold my guitar different and see if it feels good.

The reason to wa my thumg goes around the eck sometimes I think is to kill a the fret noise. When I pick from the low E and down towards the high I kill alot of noise with my right hand but the otherway around it´s more difficult. I find it easier to kill the noise by wrapping around my thumb.
But if it´s slowing me down I have to try another method. How do you get rid of the noise?

I will try to get rid of the pinky habit. I have tried before but it feels like I don´t have any control, no support for the hand. But maybe I can learn that to:)

Realy big thanks for this tips. biggrin.gif

I will say that we all get messed up on playing sometimes, I've been playing for like 35 years or so. I would agree to what Conrad said, sometimes its important to get other inputs than just playing. And you just did a good thing switching to acoustic for a while, i did it several times playing classical guitar. What's important when you are stuck is to find new influences, listen to new music, finding ways to develop musicality - not only focus to technique and good chops, writing some songs, experiment. The music is endless... What I found is dangerous, is to compare with other players chops/riffs/lines. There's always a player out there that is better technically, but do he really SAY something ? Music is like speaking, it shall say something to the listener - and all tools are approved !!!
I will conclude with a qoute by the late Miles Davis: "If i play just ONE new note in a concert, this evening is a succes..." So dont quit playing, just grab it from another angle! Keep on rocking, bro !

As far as the string noise, when you dont do it like your doing you have to refine your right hand palm muting, the interesting thing though is i think that like i stated earlier because of how you pick your getting unwanted string noise partly due to your picking hand angle. If your hand is a bit straighter i think you will find more control for muting unwanted string noise.

As far as anchoring your hand, this again is really a personal preference, i just suggested trying a different method. But if you find its comfortable for you to do that and its not hindering your playing in any way by all means continue to do it. There are alot of shred type players that anchor their picking hand in some fashion.

Two people that come to mind are Tony Macalpine and Michael Angelo Batio. Both of them anchor simliar to that.

For myself i found after analyzing my picking that it was slowing me down because i would shift my anchor point before and after i played a note instead of doing it at the same time as sounding a note. Instead of teaching myself to do it at the same time i just changed my technique. It was awkward at first but after a week or so it was like i had been doing it all along.

Ok guys!

I made a little video with a couple of riffs.
I got so nervous so I didn´t play that well but on the other side thats why I´m made this post.

If there is some other angle you would like or something just tell me and I will record it.

btw, my guitar is tuned 1/2 step down.

Cheers!

That was very nice imo, steady rhythm and everything!
Just find some extra motivation and go further,
there is no need to quit indeed. smile.gif

You can rest top of your palm on the bridge,
I do that almost all the time,
that way you'll have support but still enough freedom
to do all picking motions nicely. smile.gif

Listen to Muris......curl your fingers instead of anchoring. It'll do wonders for your picking although it will feel really awkward for a little while. smile.gif

I think it would be more unusual if you never at one point considered quitting guitar smile.gif
It's a common problem to feel that your stuck and that there's no progress at all.

Your video was really good btw. I think you did a great job on the bit you did from my lesson (and Gabriel's Megadeth too) smile.gif Would love to see a full REC video of one of those!

Not sure i can add more advice than whats allready been said though smile.gif

Wise words and suggestions from different people here.
No need to quit indeed. Just seen your video, you don't have big problems smile.gif
As Trond said, maybe you can find motivation recording some lessons for the REC.

After seeing all the response you have given here, I am going go out in the streets of Copenhagen (Vacation, woho!) tomorrow, and buy myself a camera. (Any suggestions? tongue.gif )

About the playing: My football coach once told us that before we get better, we get a little bit worse. I think the reason for this is in our brain. When we are practicing, we are actually building connections in our brain. its like building brigdes, or new tarmac. You have to stop driving a bit, so the brain can finish. The body is really smart. If you eat too much, your belly gets bigger so you can eat that amount the next time. When you exercise, the body make the lungs bigger so they can handle the stress better next time. Its the same all over our body. Under our feet, the fingertips when playing guitar. We just have to give the body some time (Usually a day is enough when its not your first week.) to repair and improve what you have been tearing down.

Ever noticed you could suddenly play something new after 1-2 weeks without guitar? wink.gif

Never quit, and PS: Metallica better bring it tomorrow!! biggrin.gif

I am very happy to hear you are not going to quit!
Also, I saw your video and your playing is at good level. Sure, you need to improve (don't we all!) but you are doing good man. I hope you will join REC program and post some lesson recording on there.
