i have this song that i have been working on for a while and i made a solo for it finally , but i dont know what chords should back the solo , because the solo is not related to my main riff too much . I want a backing that emphasizes chord tones ,but when i plan it out that way i just get lost and it seems like there is too many chords in the backing . i have provided two rough takes of my solo if that helps . Im not too great at guitar but i love making my own songs and id appreciate the help. Thank you very much =] Attached File  Capture_20090813.wmv ( 1.68MB ) Number of downloads: 333

There are zillion options for progression here, it's in a key of Em.
I can give you few ideas but I would need drums (simple beat would do)
along with your solo to point at bars/beats and chords changes.
Can you put a loop and then play your solo? smile.gif

Once you get a bit down to go along the solo, it might be easier to get the exact timing on the solo right. There seemed to be a few issues on that, if I recall it correctly from the one time I listened smile.gif As Muris' said, no doubt it's in Em. But try to put down a beat and play along that.

You might also try and see what notes you land and rest on for a longer time, that might indicate some chord choice better than other ones. As an example, if you hold a G note, Bm might not be the best choice of chords, though there are worse suiters than that, but you might then want a G chord, Em or some third choice...

yeaa i realized the issue with the timing , i ran out of my trial periods with all my drum programs =P , so i had to find a drum track online so this might be a little faster , i might have to invest in a drum program so i can actually finish the song once i have all of this down Attached File  Capture_20090813_13.wmv ( 2.27MB ) Number of downloads: 131

Ok, you played some interesting rhythmic parts in your solo
but I managed to to realize the flow of few chords that might work with it.
Try this, Em for 1 bar, Am for 1 bar, C for 1 bar and Bm for 1 bar.
It's pretty simple progression imo tho you can make it even more simple
by using C chord for 2 bars and throwing Bm chord out.
Try it and see how it sound to you. :

Timing issues appear in the bar 4, and onwards. I think it is more effective to simplify those licks so you can play them comfortably in time, then to play many notes that are not perfectly in timing.

You're welcome.
And yeah, you should make whole backing with groove and chords
and then readjust your solo a little, just to get more flow in it. smile.gif
