Hey GMC,
last week i posted a take in the REC program of the How To riff Series (part1). Link The biggest problem there was the sound/mixing. Actually at this take it was the first time i tried to use an EQ to make the sound better The result was way behind my goals What i want to do with this thread you asking? Well i want to use this place here to gain a lot more knowledge about Mixing. For the REC Take i used this EQ : Kjaerhus Classic EQ Now i got a better graphic EQ which i want to use in this thread for remixing the take. So here is my plan: When i come back later from work i will post the original track without EQ Settings and a picture what i did with the Kjaerhus Classic EQ that you can see what i made wrong and how to fix that. Then i make a screenshot from the new graphic EQ and try with your help to get a better Tone/sound for this take? Hope you like the idea and maybe some of the other GMC Members could also use this thread for learning how to mix a take greeting Edguy -------------------- My gear:

Great thread idea.
Regarding your tone, I think you'll want to make only small changes to the bass equalization to start. The tone you have may be overly heavy, but the style of the lesson does call for a tone with some real weight to it. What's making the bass seem to be a large problem is not only the eq but also the instrument's overall level in the mix. Lower the instrument's level some, and the bass frequencies in the eq some. I wouldn't make a large change to either of those things, just a few notches to both. The other things that will often be said about tone are still true; it comes from many places and it can be harmed by any one of the things that influence tone: fingers, strings, guitar body, pickup model, pickup quality, pickup selection, wiring, amp, drive/gain levels, eq, mastering compression, mix level, audio encoding compression, your speakers, our speakers, your ears, our ears, etc. I don't think you're in a bad place considering only 2 of those items were really standing out as problematic. Maybe you also had some unwanted string noise, but that goes away with improved muting in the hands. As for mixing, I think you just have those two changes to make. -------------------- ::jafomatic

Hey jafomatic first of all i want to say a big thank you for your detailed answer.
So now it's time to post to the raw take without Mixing and analyzing this first. Maybe this raw take is also to bassy but we'll see. HowtoriffNoMix.mp3 ( 978.36K ) Number of downloads: 154 The Rec comments also pointed out that the backing was to quite , but this should be fixed now in the raw take. So here is a screenshot from my EQ Settings i made in reaper for the track i used in the REC Video: For my next Mixing examples i want to use a new graphic EQ but i need to install them at first. As soon as it is installed i will post a picture and then the Mixing could start:) -------------------- My gear:

Your guitar and the drums of the backing sound like they're much closer to reasonable levels (to my amateur ears). Is there anything else in the backing that's still lost? I'm not even sure.
Definitely sounds better now to me, even raw. -------------------- ::jafomatic

Actually this 'preset' was just a sample picture to show you how to use the equlizer. I think your tone needs a different approach.
