This video finally answered the fundamental question I had, which was 'how are the modes different?' I was always confused about this, because only an different root note didn't solve the problem I had, learning the G major scale, then finding out I had also learned G Ionian, A Dorian, B Phrygian, C Lydian, D Mixolydian, E Aeolian and F# Locrian. I even came at a point where I thought I needed a complicated chord progression to even get close to sounding like the mode i wanted to sound like. I wish I'd discovered sooner that all you need is to have a sounding reference note. I also know now that there are no wrong notes you can play over a chord, only that the choice of note will always create certain effect that you may or may not like. I have been working on scales (slowly) and have slowly learned some things about modes picking it up from various lessons. After watching this guy's video this morning, my understanding reached critical mass and I believe I now understand. Now I am looking forward to all these lessons here at GMC dealing with modes with my new found knowledge (and hoping that can translate into playing). It also reminds me that I (perhaps others as well) should review the theory lessons here because I remember I learned alot but better comprehension was something to be desired.
