A trick I use all the time to help ensure that my mixing doesn't go to waste because it only sounds good on my monitoring system is this: I have tons of cheap sets of headphones. Some good ones and some crappy ones that have come with mp3 players and stuff. I do most mixing through my monitors (M-Audio BX5's). But toward the final stages, I'll start constantly switching between different pairs of headphones. When I feel like I'm in a good place in the monitors, I'll grab my Bose IE's and make sure it sounds good through them (they have crazy-super-unusual low end response). If it doesn't, I make really minor adjustments til it sounds good. Then I'll throw on the headphones that came with my ipod and do the same thing. Then go back to the monitors and make sure it still sounds good there. Then circle back to the Bose. Then try a different set of phones. And so on and so on... This way, I cover a lot of different listening scenarios without spending a ton of money on monitoring gear. I used to burn a CD of my mixes and bring it out with me. Then show all my friends in their car's systems. It would be revealing, but by the time I sat at the board/computer again, I'd be lost... saying things like "well, generally, things were too bassy in every car." or "In Steve's car the vocals sounded too loud, but it's fine in my car". It made addressing the problems difficult because there was no way to A/B the two. Once I integrated this headphone deal into my mixing process, the CD's started to sound more consistent between every car stereo. Almost always acceptable. During final stages I take three pairs of headphones I have, K141 Studio headphones, cheapo Genius heaphones, and my half-cheap Nokia earphones.
