Quest For New Amp Finally Over, I've found my new head :)

After long a painstaking search on the web, reading numerous articles from tone gurus, and amp veterans, I finally gave up from getting a Marshall head. The cliche saying:" They don't make them like they used too" is definitely true. If I cannot get a real 68 Plexi head, no point in getting reissue one, since it is way from the original design ( and it costs a LOT more than really worth).

Instead of that, I've found a very cool head yesterday, and it is the Hiwatt Custom 100 head:

It's darker than Marshall, and more cleaner, less aggressive, but great clean sound and classic british rock tone. Lot louder than Marshall and more punchier tone as well, VERY dynamic amp.

I got it really cheap as well 1300e for brand new head. On the internet their price is lot bigger, so I think it will be a great platform to build the sound on.

People who were famous by use of these amps were Dave Gilmour, and Pete Townshend, but many other artists used them as well.

Thanks guys. The head is trully amazing, and very vintage like. Although it looks a lot like Marshall Super Lead Heads, the actual circuit and sound are very different. There are some settings where these two amps meet in terms of tone, but that is a very brief moment. This amp can roar! smile.gif

Check out the point to point military grade wiring inside, simplicity at it's best, nothing to stand in way of tone:

Really nice amp Ivan! I am a fan of the Plexi tone also and have heard some good thing about these Hiwatt heads.

Will you be giving us a review and/or some sound clips when you get everything dialed in? It would also be nice to know what speaker cabinet you are running it through.

Congrats smile.gif

"Think of a guitar solo as a paragraph. You need a clear beginning, a middle, and an end. Look at musical phrases like sentences, and make sure you break them up using punctuation—or space. You pause naturally when conversing, right? If you don't, you'll bore the listener. The same thing will happen with your audience if your solo is one dimensional. You'll wear them out and lose their attention." —Tom Principato

I'm agree with you Ivan. Marshall is far to be what it was. I have a 1975 Marshall MkII and no other Marshall head or reissue is close to compare with my head (Or at least what I tried). That head is a really nice choice, it has a very nice clean sound. Congrats for that man!!

Yeah I was a bit suspicious about the price in the beginning but I was assured it was new, and looks and sounds brand new. I think it was a mistake in the order, this is why the price is lowered down.

That's the metal front plate era, those Marshalls were great as well. They started to change circuit and cab materials a lot around circa 71-73, but back in those days it was still built to last.

Yeah, I tried the other day some new Marshall heads. MG series, new JMC 900, Zakk Wylde's signature model, and tI was like "Is this the new "amazing" stuff?". It was really disappointing.
