Hey guys. I was just wondering... when you guys practice the lessons here, do you usually learn the full lesson or song that is presented to you, so you can play it fully over the backing tracks? I notice that I get kinda lazy, and frankly, I just have a difficult time remembering several different solos, one from each lesson. Usually I just take bits from the lesson, like licks I haven't heard before, or if I'm not up to speed in NPS, i usually work on speed for a bit so I can kind of catch up. That sort of thing. Anybody else do this?

I'm in the same boat as Audiopaal. I got a lot more "out of GMC" from the forums, chat, etc, but of the lessons I did bookmark and learn, I'm pretty sure I learned more "parts" than "wholes"

Gennerally when it comes to lessons or songs you should practice to learn them whole note by note. That will boost your memory stamina. You need to finish things to the end and build up your repertoire of full songs. Regarding solo lessons, I think it would be wise to learn one lesson full at least to be able to play it that day and until your forget it - close to original. Once you do that, it would be best to use the lick/knowledge into building your own solo over the same backing. Point of that kind of lesson is to teach you how to improvise your own stuff and incorporate licks you like.

Im more of a "sit down and learn it perfectly" kinda player. Infact, be it a GMC lesson or a favorite song, if it takes all year I will complete it smile.gif

Im a bit of a perfectionist, im not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing, but I dont mind spending alot of time over things, be it music, or studies, or fishing laugh.gif laugh.gif

It really depends on how difficult the lesson is.... If it is easy i try to learn it if its hard a play what i can and try to learn it as i get better

I personally use GMC as a self serve kind of open bar..
I rarely learn whole lesson, but kind of pick from here and there to add to my musical vocabulary.
That's one thing that I love here, there are so many lessons that you can use the website in many different ways..
long live GMC!

If a lesson really sounds good to me I usually learn the whole thing and try to perfect it so I can submit it to the REC program. There are a few lessons here way beyond my ability that I pull things from for practice since playing them are more fun than just playing scales. Such as World Set On Fire by Emir. Actually, I have the whole thing memorized now but still can't get even close to playing it at full speed.

Thanks guys smile.gif. Yeah, Ive only learned like 2 whole lessons, out of several that I have on my bookmarks. The rest have certain parts, licks, or techniques that I really like, and i practice to add to my repetoire of musical skills, like somebody else previously stated.

It depends on what the lesson is about. If the lesson is about speed, I don't go practicing one part of it until I can play it up tempo. I just learn the main lick and the different places to play the lick, then I try to play it every day with metronome/backing track so my speeds increases. If the lesson is about theory, like for instance introduction to a mode I'm currently working on, I take look at the licks, play them once, and them try to come up with my own stuff over the backing. There are a zillion other ways to practice lessons, like Ivan's playalong lessons about the CAGED system, and the ways full songs lessons are displayed. Some lessons are mainly about introducing new chords, so I try to transcribe those lessons into a different key.

However, although I'd like to play every single lesson here on GMC, lately I've been practicing more and more full songs (also from GMC nonetheless) and neglecting some of the lessons I've bookmarked. Some lessons I've got bookmarked but never even attempted and others are lessons I play almost every day. It really, really depends on the lessons itself.

Like everybody said, everybody do it differently, but how you will use the lessons is in the end a matter of personal preference. There is no good way or the bad way. The important thing is to get those fingers moving with the click, and learn theory, everything else will fit into place along the way.

I strongly suggest you learn whole lessons rather than just parts. We as instructors compose lessons to have intro development and ending, so you should approach every lesson that way. If you just take bits and pieces then you don't have complete material grasped. Imagine learning some technical lesson by Emir or Muris for example... If you learn the whole piece it will be much more rewarding then if you just learn one part. Sure it takes more time to master whole lessons but I think in a longer run it is well worth it. It will get you to think more about songwriting and composing. Hopefully it will give you ideas to create your own music, lessons or anything you aim for.
That's the way I see it anyways smile.gif

I think that is most important to learn whole lessons, I mean in general....it's important to learn whole songs, you get the feel for song strucure, composition. I mean, when you play live you play whole songs yeah?

I make myself learn the whole lesson and be able to play it up to speed well enough to get a passing grade in the REC program. I spent my first year here learning bits and pieces and not making as much progress as I've made since I committed to myself to pick out whole lessons and learn to play the whole thing.

I really agree on our instructors smile.gif learn the whole lessons, otherwise your progression will stop somewhere! If you only like a part of a song, it's not a crime to not learn the whole lesson, but this should be an exception smile.gif
