Lets get started Angelo!

In your guitar CV your goals were very open since you are just starting with guitar playing. I actually really like this because we can start from very basics and cover everything in all areas!

For your first lesson I would like you to read 2 theory and harmony links I provided. Based on these links I will ask you questions (like a mini test in a way) where you will demonstrate me if you learned foundation in major scale.

Here is your 1st assignment :

Theory reading :

- I would like you to read my posts from links provided below.
- [b]Once you read it all, memorize 3 and 4 part harmony in C major scale.

- Learn to apply scale degrees rather then numbers ( I in C major is C, IV in C is F etc).
- Write out in this thread all notes for 3 and 4 part harmony in C major scale.

The deadline for this assignment is one week from today (13th of September).

Here are the links :

Major scale harmony and chord functions

Cadences

Extra assignment (technique alternate picking) :

- Record each lick in 3 different tempos! Make sure tempos are at least 15-20 bpm difference.
- Try to show me your maximum tempo for these licks, I want you to push yourself here!
- Feel free to ask for more exercises if these are too easy for you!
- Upload your takes in this thread. Ideally I would like you to do videos, put them on Youtube and embed them here.

If you don't manage to read theory and harmony post and learn things from it, don't get to this assignment! If you do, then you can perhaps not do 3 but 1 tempo for each exercise. Instead of 5 exercises, I am giving you 3 which should make it more easier to cover.

Let me know if you have any questions Angelo! Have fun with this assignment smile.gif

C Major: CDEFGAB

3 Part:

CEG - C Major
DFA - D Minor
EGB - E Minor
FAC - F Major
GBD - G Major
ACE - A Minor
BDF - B ?

4 Part:

CEGB - ?
DFAC - ?
EGBD - ?
FACE - ?
GBDF - ?
ACEG - ?
BDFA - ?

It should be this, but I don't understand how to assign their own name to each chord.

...And I'd like to know the meaning of learning these things. Thanks Pedja.

Good job so far Angelo.
Let me tell you the purpose before we continue. Since you are beginner at guitar and new to theory, I think it is best way to learn things simultaneously. In other words, we will learn some theory and harmony (how scales are constructed, chords, what kind of harmony is in major or minor scale etc) but with that we will work on technique (like we are working on alternate right now). Pretty soon you will have assignments where I would give you chord progression where you should improvise and use alternate licks you learned for example.
Do you have any more questions regarding this?

As far as chords go, read this post HERE

I explain there that in any major scale, in 4 part chords we have Major 7 chords on scale degrees I and IV, Minor 7 are on II III and VI, Dominant 7 on V, and Minor7b5 is on VII scale degree. In previous link you will see that 7th scale degree is Diminished triad.

I will post one video on Youtube very soon for you. That will help you with harmony and chords.

Let me know if you need any help or have questions Angelo!

In your second post in this topic you put the same URL for "Major scale harmony and chord functions" and "Cadences" which both links to the "Major Scale" Topic.

So now I have to read about cadence, thanks.

Angelo you can skip the part about cadences. Just read first paragraph which explains about 3 part and 4 part harmony in C major scale. No worries about cadences, thats not our concern right now. I would rather you focus on Alternate picking exercises !

ex1: 60 80 95 bpm
ex2: 60 80 95 bpm
ex3: 60 80 95 bpm
ex4: 60 80 100 bpm

I can't play the 5th exercise at a speed higher than 70bpm without making mistakes, so I didn't record it.

This is starting to sound very good Angelo. Keep working on them and try to move tempos. Also, please pay attention not to lift up too much left hand fingers as unwanted muting noise may occur.

Let me know if you got any questions!

Record them again and do last example and tempo you are comfortable!
